1 Objective: Today we will… So that we will be able to…
Review control groups Stations to Practice for Tomorrow’s Test So that we will be able to… Design scientific investigations using TQs, IVs, DVs, CVs, and control groups. Distinguish between observations & inferences when we collect data. Write evidence-based conclusions for our investigations.

2 Brainstorm: Zoe jogs every morning. She notices that the sun also rises every morning. She collects the following data: She concludes that the sun rises because she jogs. Is this a reasonable conclusion? What is wrong with Zoe’s conclusion? What should she do differently in her experiment to fix this? (Or, what would you do to disprove her conclusion?) Have her NOT jog one day and see that the sun still rises.

3 Control Group: A separate group in which you do not use the IV
Shows what would have happened under “normal” conditions After the experiment, we can compare our results to our control to see if the IV actually had any effect

4 Control Groups: Zoe adds a control group to her investigation. How does this change her data? How does this change her conclusion?

5 How to Choose Your Control:
Testable Question IV DV Control How does the amount of protein you eat affect how much muscle you have? Amount of extra protein given to each player Muscle mass gained by each player How much muscle gained by players who did not receive any extra protein How does the amount of sunlight a sunflower gets affect its height? Amount of sunlight given to each flower Height of the flower How does the type of antibiotic used affect how many bacteria are killed? Type of antibiotic How many bacteria are killed Measure the DV without the IV: How tall the sunflower grows without any sunlight. How many bacteria die without any antibiotics. Turn and Talk: How is this different from a controlled variable?

6 How to Choose Your Control:
Testable Question IV DV Control How does the number of droughts that occur in the summer affect the size of the bark beetle population? How does the volume of a jar placed over a candle affect how long a candle will burn? Measure the DV without the IV: How tall the sunflower grows without any sunlight. How many bacteria die without any antibiotics. Turn and Talk: How is this different from a controlled variable?

7 Control Group vs Controlled Variables
Amanda wants to see if watching Sesame Street helps young children learn their ABC’s. She takes a group of 20 four-year olds and has them watch 1 hour of Sesame Street each day. After 1 year, she tests them to see if they can say their ABC’s. CVs: Control Group: Underline IV, Circle DV. Compare CVs and control groups.

8 STATIONS: Our Unit Test is TOMORROW!
The problems at each station are the SAME TYPES of problem of that you will see on your test. So, this is a great opportunity to test yourself and see if you feel prepared. If you finish a station early, please work on your study guide!

9 Closing: As a table, please answer the following questions:
What are the best things to do to study tonight? - Rework the problems from today’s stations - Answer questions on the study guide 2) Where can I find the practice problems from today’s stations? - All materials are on the class website 3) True or False: I can reassess if the unit test does not go well. - FALSE! Unit tests are the final assessment for a unit. After the unit test, we move on.

10 REVIEW STATIONS NOTE: I’ll print out 2 sets of these stations so that students can spread out 

11 STATION 1: Observations & Inferences
Use the dry erase markers to complete the questions on the worksheet. Check your work with your partner. Please erase your answers before you change stations! Worksheets are saved in a separate word doc.

12 STATION 2: Testable Questions
Use the dry erase markers to complete the questions on the worksheet. Check your work with your partner. Please erase your answers before you change stations!

13 Station 3: Variables Use the dry erase markers to complete the questions on the worksheet. Check your work with your partner. Please erase your answers before you change stations!

14 STATION 4: Control Groups
Use the dry erase markers to complete the questions on the worksheet. Check your work with your partner. Please erase your answers before you change stations!

15 Accessing Our Textbook:
Go to Log in with the same username and password you use for your history textbook or create a new account. Click the “Add” button next to your list of textbooks. Enter the code passed out in class on the sheet called “Setting Up & Accessing Your Online Biology Textbook.” The code can also be found in our syllabus. Print half sheets

16 Our Class Website: www.prospectridgeacademy.org Click on “Academics”
Select “High School” Click on “Classes” and then “9th Grade Biology/9th Grade Biology Honors” General information will be posted on the class page. Daily power points/assignments will be posted on the calendar, which can be accessed from my main teacher page. Click “Subscribe” to BOTH my teacher page and the class page.
