1 Strategy for Successfully Drilling and Completing Wells on a Multi-Well Pad Alan Vasicek Apache Corporation

2 Alan Vasicek Bio Introduction Apache Corporation
Worldwide Drilling – Houston, TX Global Directional Drilling Advisor DD Manager, DDC, Sr DD, M/LWD, Multi-laterals – 34 yrs BS Petroleum Engineering, University of Texas Strong driver of drilling optimization, performance improvement, new technology and applying engineering principles to directional drilling ConocoPhillips Ekofisk/Eldfisk offshore Norway project with extensive anti-collision work

3 MultiWell Pad Challenges
Old vertical wells w/poor or no surveys Existing and future surface facilities Existing pipelines On-Lease pads and Off-Lease pads Offset operators drilling and completions activities – current and future Limitations on directional work for production – max doglegs, max inclination and still get wellbore displacement How many wells on a lease? On each pad? Just everyday Permian drilling challenges – losses, water flows w/H2S, target TVD changes

4 Arial footage for Lynch A HZ (Wildfire) acreage

5 Lease lines and pipelines overlaid

6 First and last take points are acquired from Geology

7 First iteration - Does not take into account future wells, facilities or additional surface hazards

8 Planning Workflow for Consecutive Iterations
High definition drone footage is added to find additional surface hazards Collaborative work w/ facilities, completions, etc… for optimal location placement FTP and LTP from Geology Drilling determines surface location Future possible wells (2 – 3 years out) added to well planning scenario Wolfcamp pad locations moved farther south to avoid collision issues and cost w/ future Spraberry wells Planning time reduced significantly

9 Lynch SHL Proposal Latest Iteration
Original Plan for Facilities Line Discoverable Pipeline Discoverable Pipeline Facilities Reroute to Accommodate Future Spraberry Pad Lynch SHL Proposal Latest Iteration Lynch A HZ Wells (Rectangular Targets) Pad 1: #30HM, #31HM, #32HM Pad 2: #33HM,#34HM, #35HM, #36HM Pad 3: #37HM, #38HS, #39HS Pads 4, 5, 6: 12 future Spraberry wells (Yellow and White Circle Targets) Red: Pipeline, Pink: Section Line, Gold: Facilities

10 Opposing Laterals with offset operator Potential 28 wells in half section

11 Opposing Laterals with Offset Operator

12 Anti-Collision Control
Three target zones combined with opposing curve wellbores (from offset operator) causes potential anti-collision and space issues Opposite side wellbores must “wrap” around opposing wellbores to drill in same vertical plane Have a detailed Anti-Collision and Survey policy Ensure everyone understands and abides by policy – field and office staff, operator and DD service company Be aware of SF and EOU for survey tools – tighten EOU’s if needed “Drill the Line” – one drifting well bore off course can have serious consequences!!!
