Announce who is the king/queen and let him or her sit in front of the room in a comfortable chair. Let the king/queen pick three/four people to be noble lords. The noble lord will choose their vassals. (a fief is given in exchange for protection, vassals must sit around the lords) Everyone else will be a peasant or serf.

Rules of the simulation
Peasants have to do everything the king and nobles ask them to do Peasants can not talk to the kings or nobles. Peasants can not question what the nobles or king/queen ask them to do The simulation will continue through the class period. The king may ask the peasants to sharpen his or her pencil, etc. Nothing disrespectful!

Was this fair? Why or why not? How divided was social class during the middle ages? Examples of what you saw during this activity that make you think this way. Who has the best job and the good life? Who had the worst job and the bad life?

What is the Middle Ages? Transition from ancient times to modern times. AKA The Dark Ages

How did we get to the Middle Ages?
Ancient Egypt conquered by Romans- Egypt becomes part of the Roman Empire The Roman Empire grows!!!!

Due to corruption, etc. 180 CE Rome begins to fall Emperor Constantine moves Rome to Western Europe- becomes Byzantine Empire (this is the old Roman empire)

Transition to modern times Division in Europe over church, language, Greeks, Romans, etc. Charlemagne unites Europe for 1st time in awhile He improves life, Christianity spreads However, when Charlemagne dies the empire declines- ATTACKS BY VIKINGS!!!

Life in Europe is very dangerous due to the unstable government
To restore order FEUDALISM begins. ……this is the time period we are currently studying
