The Challenge 115 School Districts with ~ 2,500 schools
~97 Charter Schools ~1.3 mill students (K12) 17 UNC system institutions 58 community colleges 36 independent colleges / universities Plus many others Main partners providing education in NC from a K-12 perspective Many different and vibrant organizations Not one shoe fits all Universities at the fore-front (already have implemented Federated authentication what is within their control. Teacher and Staff Time Is Valuable
2 min per student per year for account administration, focusing on Middle and High School ~ 3000 admin work days statewide(K6-12) Times logins for Network, Media-Center, Lunch, Study Island, Moodle, etc. (~5) => 15,000 work days A highlight of one of the K-12 business cases Very conservatively - K6 to K12 - Left out Virtual learning from the student probably more like double or triple. We all recognize this: Holiday shopping - how many accounts to you need? Slide 3

21st Century Learning Virtual Public Schools Learn-And-Earn
K-12 plus Colleges and Universities blend into K-20 Student, Teacher, Parents are all part of the student’s education “Streamlining student account administration” The business case gets more complex with adding more Dynamic learning environment by including more and more organizations School administrators have to setup even more accounts: i.e. parents, guardians Slide 4

The Vision of NCTrust “Every student (staff) uses one username and password to access learning resources in North Carolina” A Taskforce was formed and a pilot project was created: Two K-12 Districts (Rockingham-, Davie County), UNC, UNC-GA, Duke, NCSU, Central Piedmont, Wake Tech, MCNC, NC-DPI, Virtual Computing Lab, and NC LIVE. Pilot “ends” in January 2010. Additional considerations: Securing student data Moving towards Online testing (CIMS) Computerized Instructional Management System providing Online and off-line testing. Latest Thinking… NCTrust = A student’s learning passport which remains with the student for his/her learning career and is valid at all Schools, Colleges, Universities, Virtual Schools, Libraries, etc. Scale How can such passport be used by every Student in the State? Slide 9
