1 Lesson 22 The Body in Balance
Objectives Discuss the functions the body does automatically Explore how to maintain a constant temperature in water and apply to the bodies ability to maintain temperature Bellwork List some important functions your body does without you having to think about it.

2 Getting Started Read “Making Adjustments”
Establish a rhythm (metronome?) and challenge students to control their breathing in rhythm while you read. Most will revert to normal breathing patterns by the time you finish. Define Homeostasis (p 185 in SG) Use the questions at the end to stimulate a discussion in preparation for the Inquiry. Advantages of homeostasis? How would life be different without it?

3 Question Prediction Materials
How can you maintain water at a constant 370C when constantly exposed to heat and cold? If the water is exposed to heat then it will _____ and I will have to _________ to maintain homeostasis because________________ Large test tubes and clamps, beakers with ice water, candles, pie pans, thermometers, graduated cylinder Prediction Materials

4 Procedure Inquiry 22.1 p. 184 Review safety tips
Demo holding the candle at the proper height, placing in ice water and touching to paper towel before putting back over the flame. Define Warning: the test tube must be in cold water or over the candle at all times. Inquiry 22.1 p. 184 Measure 15 ml of water into a test tube. Place the thermometer in the test tube Hold test tube over the flame until it reaches 370C When you reach 370C record the temperature and continue recording every minute for 10 min. Maintain the temp at 370C by alternating between the flame and ice water (touch to paper towel)

5 Data/Results Conclusion Next question
Design a data table for this Inquiry Graph the data? Answer the 3 questions in step 7 Conclusion Next question

6 Reflections P 185 SG Complete questions 2 and 3 Discuss as a class
Readings “Lie Detectors” p 186 SG “Spies-Back Home” p 188 SG Cooperation Specialization Pairs Dependability

7 Vocabulary Other homework Medulla Fever Homeothermic Homeostasis
Extension 1- research adapting to hot/cold situations Extension 3- research thermostats, how the work and compare to the body (make a model?) Extension 4- humidity vs temperature Study guide for final assessment
