1 BASEAL New Beginnings - 1

2 Favourites Wheel Fill in the outer rim with one thing you like in each category then………. find someone else who has the same favourite things and put their name in the same inner space.

3

4 Rounds I found out something good that I didn’t know about …….. this week. It is ……. One of the groups I belong to is ……..

5 I know what it feels like to be unwelcome.
L.O.1 I know how to make someone feel welcomed and valued at school. L.O.2 I know what it feels like to be unwelcome.

6 We are going to carry on the story you heard in assembly.

7

8

9 Q. What do you think the villagers thought of Polly and Digory?
Q. Why do you think the villagers reacted the way they did to Polly and Digory? Q. Do you think they meant to be unkind? Q. Why do you think the village looked beautiful at the beginning of the story but not at the end? Q. Do you think that everyone agreed with the oldest villager?

10 You will need to be in a small group of 5 or 6.
Practice for three minutes then be ready to act out the story of Polly and Digory. When you get to the part where Polly and Digory are walking away you will need to “freeze frame” (stop acting). Those of you being villagers can tell us how you think Polly and Digory feel.

11

12 In your group think of an ending to the story – either sad or happy.
Now write an opposite ending to the one you have thought of.

13 Work with a partner. You will now need some paper to make a “lift the flap” book about the story. When each flap is lifted it should show how the characters feel inside at the different stages of the story.

14 BASEAL New Beginnings - 2

15 L.O.1 I can use problem-solving activities to solve a problem.

16

17 You will need to be in a group of 5 or 6.
Each of you is a villager and has a particular point of view about why Polly and Digory should or should not be allowed into the village and to share the food. You must hold a problem-solving meeting following the correct steps and come up with a plan to solve the problem. We shall then compare the plans from each group.

18 The new world might be a little like school:
When someone joins school do we make them welcome? How do we do that? What other things could we do to make them welcome? Has anyone ever felt that they were not welcome?

19 Now we are going to hear and record the solutions each group has produced.
Thinking about new worlds is fun but there is an important reason to do it. We want to work together to make our classroom a fantastic place to work and play in.

20 Would any of the solutions work in our classroom?
What would we need to do to make it work? Is there anything in the class that helps us work and play together?

21 Some of the things which help us get on better with each other are:
School Council; Befriending new pupils; Class and school rules; Learning about each other in circle time; ?

22 BASEAL New Beginnings - 3

23 L.O.1 I can contribute towards making a class charter. L.O.2 I understand my rights and responsibilities in the school. L.O.3 I understand why we need to have different rules in different places and know what the rules are in school.

24 The rest of you will just have to sit and watch!
I am going to do an exercise with some of the class. The rest of you will just have to sit and watch!

25 Do you think that what I have been doing is “fair” ?
Why / why not? Do you expect to be treated “fairly” by teachers? Is this a ‘right’ you have? A ‘right’ is something that everyone should expect when they are at school. It is how we would like things to be.

26 If we are to make our classroom a fantastic place
EVERYONE must share. The classroom must be fair to all.

27 Let us list some of the rights we think we should have in our classroom:

28 Some of the ‘rights’ might be:

29 Let’s see if we can group your ideas under these headings:

30 We have a RIGHT to: Be treated fairly Be respected Be able to learn
Enjoy coming to school and be safe Be included

31 RIGHTS there also come RESPONSIBILITIES! With your
If, for example, we have a right to expect our things to be kept safe in the classroom then we also have a responsibility not to touch other people’s things.

32 Let’s see if we can balance RIGHTS with RESPONSIBILITIES.

33 We are going to work in a group of 3 or 4 to produce our own class charter.
Let us remember what we have discussed about ‘rights’ and ‘responsibilities’. When each group has finished ONE person will put forward their group’s ideas. They will then help to produce the class’s charter.

34 Usually there is a link between the
class’s charter and the school’s rules. REMEMBER……. Rules are there to make sure that people’s RIGHTS are protected and that people do carry out their RESPONSIBILITIES.

35 You might like to remember and consider the rules you made last year and to think about if, or how, you have improved on them during your group discussions this year.

36 BASEAL New Beginnings - 4

37 L.O.1 I know how to make someone feel welcomed and valued at school.
I know what it feels like to be unwelcome.

38 You will need to be in a group of 5 or 6.
Each group will be given a new child to look after for a day. Your child may have particular skills or problems. At the end of the day you will need to be able to tell the class how you got on. REMEMBER…not only do you have to show your child how things work at school but you must also show an interest in them and where they came from.

39 continued on next slide

40

41 Let’s consider the…..

42 We are going to look at a poem to explore how children feel when they are left out of a group.
Afterwards we will think about how it feels to be left out, how our actions may affect others and what strategies we can use to make sure everyone feels valued and included.

43

44 How do you feel if you are left out?
How does what we do affect others? How can we make sure everyone feels included?

45 How many different ways do we know of saying “Welcome”?
We are going to collect as many as we can.

46 BASEAL New Beginnings - 5

47 L.O.1 I know how to join a group. L.O.2 I can predict how I am going to feel in a new situation or when meeting new people.

48 What happened when Polly and Digory tried to join a new group?
We are going to look at how we feel when we have to join a new group and things we can do to make it easier.

49 Which new group have you ever joined?
How did you feel? Were you excited? nervous? frightened? Why do you think you felt like this?

50 Sometimes we are not sure that people will like us in their group.
No-one likes to feel rejected and we all want to feel we belong. Q. Have the fears we have felt in the past been real or imagined? Sometimes the “anticipation” is worse than actually doing something. When we have done it we usually feel satisfaction and relief.

51 We are going to share ideas about what has
helped you when you were trying to join a group. Is there anything you did which helped you change your thoughts and feelings? How did that help?

52 1. Helpful and hopeful thoughts.
What we say to ourselves affects how we feel; e.g. if we are telling each other ghost stories it is easy to get frightened. We are going to do an activity to explain how what we say affects how we feel. You will need to be in two circles – one inside the other –and while the outer circle just watches, the inner circle will act out how they feel when meeting someone new. At the end the watchers (observers) must decide which children from the inner circle they would like to join.

53 Let’s list reasons for the choices we made in our activity?
Do they involve facial expression or body language? How can people look friendly and confident? Do they : smile; walk confidently……..

54 You could have something to ask them about. What could you ask?
What sort of questions have people in the class found useful? What type of question is the best to open a conversation? Is it better to ask an open or a closed question?

55 Some questions you could ask are: Do you live round here?
What’s it like living here then? What school do you go to? Do you like your teacher? What is Mr. / Mrs. X like? Do you like football? What do you like doing?

56 Give the person a compliment and listen to what they say.
3. Be nice to people. Give the person a compliment and listen to what they say. Be really interested in finding out. What tone of voice will you use? Choose your words carefully.

57 Now we are going to practise some good listening behaviour.
Work with a small group and make up a role-play to show some ‘friendliness skills’. Afterwards we will ask about what worked well and what could have been better.

58 BASEAL New Beginnings - 6

59 L.O.1 I can manage my feelings and can usually find a way to calm myself down when necessary.

60 When we join a new group we often feel nervous or
scared so we may need to find ways to calm our bodies and our minds. Let’s share our ideas on how we feel inside and what we do to calm down when we are feeling anxious or scared.

61

62 Then there is this little rhyme:

63 You may know of some calming music or have a calming picture you can look at to help you.

64

65

66

67

68

69 We need to write down all your ideas about what helps you calm down when you are nervous or upset. We can make them into a class poster.

70 It would be interesting for you to record how you feel throughout the day so you will notice when you are beginning to need to calm down. The Emotional Barometer may help you.

71 You will each need one of these to keep next to you throughout the day.
Move the arrow as your feelings change.

72 Use the appropriate word to fit your mood.

73 BASEAL New Beginnings - 7

74 L.O.1 I know that I belong to a community. L.O.2 I know what I have to do myself to make the classroom and the school a safe and fair place for everyone and that it is not O.K. for other people to make it unsafe or unfair.

75 Let’s think about what we have already learned about:
1. welcoming people into and joining groups, 2. our classroom charter 3. feelings.

76 Now you have to imagine you are leaving this school to go to another one. You must choose:
ONE thing you would take with you from this school to an ‘ideal’ school if you had the chance; ONE thing you would leave behind; ONE new thing you would create specially to take. The things can be REAL or just IDEAS, THOUGHTS or FEELINGS.

77 You will need to write your ideas on the correct coloured leaf.
The things you are taking should be on the green leaves and the things you are leaving should be on the orange or brown leaves.

78 Questions for reflection and enquiry.
As long as I don’t hurt or upset you do I have the right to be who I want to be? Do I have to be like you to be liked by you? I wonder if we should always share our things. What do you think? I wonder if we should let anyone join our groups. What do you think? What would happen if everyone wanted to join the same group? Why do people sometimes not want others to join their groups? Does everyone want to be in the same groups? Are some groups more popular than others?

79 Review. What have you learned from thinking about New Beginnings?
What have you done this week to make our school a special place? What have you learned from thinking about New Beginnings? Has what you have learned changed the way you think or understand things? These are the things we said we would learn to do in our work on this theme….Do you think you can do those things now?
