Grammar and Conventions #3:
Adjectives – words that describe a person, an object, a place, or an idea embodied in a noun, noun phrase, noun clause, or pronoun. It generally comes before the word it describes. Activity: Where are the adjectives in these sentences? The old man wore a green sweater, torn pants, and a dirty overcoat. The jam tart tasted delicious. Old, green, torn, dirty Delicious (follows the noun)

Adverbs – Words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs in terms of time, place, and manner. Often –ly is added to adjectives. Activity: Identify the adverbs in each of the sentences The team left the field silently. The dog who attacked the child is really vicious. Silently Really

Good/Well and Real/Really Rule: Good is always an adjective; well is most often an adverb Rule: Real is always an adjective; really is always an adverb Activity: Which is the correct sentence? It went real well. It went really good. It went real good It went really well. It went really well.

Putting it all together…. In your journal: In your passage analysis for The Great Gatsby, underline the adverbs you used and circle the adjectives you used. Then change two sentences so that they incorporate 2 vocab words from lesson Greek/Latin roots lesson 3. In the grammar section of your journal, evaluate: - how many adverbs versus adjectives did you use? (If none, add some! ) - how specific were your adverbs and adjectives? (Change reallys, importants, verys, and other vague word choice).
