Focus Areas
Six focus areas are available:
Food Technology
Graphic Products
Resistant Materials Technology
Systems and Control Technology
Textiles Technology
Industrial Technology

4. WJEC GCSE Design & Technology
Candidates may follow up to two GCSE Design and Technology specifications in the same examination session.
They would need to submit a different project in each focus area and take specialist papers in each focus area.
The core paper mark would be carried over to both entries (for the same tier of entry).

5. WJEC GCSE Design & Technology
Permissible Combinations
Candidates may take only one GCSE (Short Course) in D&T in any examination session.
Candidates may not take a GCSE (Short Course) and a full GCSE in D&T in the same examination session.

Gender
National D&T figures (all boards) show that at A* - C, girls outperformed boys by 16% (2002)
WJEC figures for 2002 show that at A* - C girls outperform boys by 16.6%
In 2003 WJEC figure is 17.2%
In 2004 WJEC figure is 16.2%

GCSE D&T results by component
Overall results in 2004 were very close to 2003 figures
Coursework remains the strongest component for most candidates
Around 63% (66% 2002) of candidates gained a mark of 48 or above (Grade C) in the project.
Similar figure for 2004 with 49 as the coursework boundary.

The vast majority of candidates restrict their folios to about 25 A3 sides – could be even lower
Relevance is a key consideration which should be kept in mind for 2004 as well
Many centres encourage relevant use of ICT

ICT appears in the assessment criteria for investigating, designing and communicating & modelling
A candidate who does not use any ICT will not be able to achieve 103/103
CAM is to be encouraged and will be credited in the making mark, but it is not mandatory

What moderation procedures operate at inter-Board level?
Not quite sure what this question is asking – but if it refers to comparability studies it is best directed to the regulatory authorities.

What steps do ABs take to guarantee comparability between bodies?
Representatives from ABs attend conferences led by the Regulatory Authorities

How do ABs encourage creativity over neat nonsense and formulaic responses?
Guidance is provided and illustrated at INSET meetings and conveyed via the Principal moderator’s report.

Can wall hangings be removed from Textiles technology options? – not really D&T?
WHY is it not an acceptable product? No product is exempt as long as centres ensure appropriate research, analysis, design specifications and design development and manufacturing skills.

Can more focus be made on healthy products in Food Tech? – e.g remove unhealthy cakes.
Again, no product is prohibited but teachers are advised to guide candidates to address the nutritional values of food materials as well as aesthetic and functional properties- higher marks can only be achieved when candidates demonstrate depth of knowledge.

What is the most productive type of annotation – e.g. post-its?
‘Post –its’ are an effective way of communicating how marks have been awarded. Individual candidate assessment sheets have sufficient space for teacher annotation.

What changes will take place in the exam and coursework in light of the Reform?
ABs have not yet been given any clear guidelines.

Could Boards sort out and clarify the difference between ‘criteria’, ‘design specification’ and product specification?
This question is difficult to answer – each of the terms needs to be put into context. A ‘Glossary of Terms’ is available for candidates.

What steps are being taken to consult with NAAIDT and DATA to improve assessment methods at KS4?
When is the current system due for revision?
At present we have not received any guidance from the Regulatory Authority on the future timescale for revision of specifications

Will the developing syllabuses reflect computer-led approach of developing technology?
Our specifications already address the need for ICT and CAD/CAM to play a prominent role in the coursework project and candidates are penalised if there is a total absence of such technologies. New specifications will inevitably to create further opportunities.

More clarification on: getting A* grades in food tech; number of food practicals?
Guidance is offered at INSET; It is not the number of practicals that is important, rather the relevance of each which leads to a genuine design evolution.
