RBS Future of HVE report
“A pervasive narrative about UK manufacturing paints a gloomy picture of gradual decline. It tells the story of full and inevitable retreat. It is a beguiling tale with a fatal flaw: it’s not true.” “a brave new high-tech world in which High Value Engineering (HVE) plays a pivotal role in both the growth of the manufacturing sector, and the country’s economy as a whole.” “Almost unanimous (98%) agreement that research and development is crucial to UK growth” “UK HVE companies will need to continue to invest in research and development, work closely with universities, patent new ideas efficiently and strive for excellence in design and production” “Birmingham, Sheffield and Manchester are highlighted as the cities that will lead a new High Value Engineering revolution” Where does Leeds fit into this picture??
3
Why Leeds? A cadre of enthused leaders with a strong track record in quality research across a broad range of disciplines Including Engineering, SPEME, Food, Textiles, Chemistry and Physics 4 new CDTs at Leeds and partners in 2 more inside the HVE theme. One IMC and capacity to get more in HVE theme High impact already through;- HVCM hub, IPRD, Technical textiles, Medical Technology and many others Ambitious cadre of academics who want to work with industry in second largest UK university Already have good links with a lot of multi nationals Leeds is listed as a one of only 3 top hotspots for EPS R&D by RBS report

What will be different? A new culture and organisation
A research centre which is strategically focussed internally , with a clear mission and the critical mass of resources with people and equipment to deliver it A centre that is strategically focussed externally to work on the right game changing challenges with the right companies able to maximise impact; Each sub theme will operate as a team with the necessary range of skills and continuity to tackle the complex challenges in HVE Important investment by the university to support this and act as an important signal to the outside
5
HVE Theme- products & processes
Coordination, support, growth, large funding projects Development of strategic relationships Socio-economic interface Facilitated move to full scale Ind. Bio and advanced materials synthesis Process Scale up Development Research TRL 2-4 Sub themes Improved quality of life Better materials and products Basic research TRL1/2 Assisted robotic technologies Med Tech Fibrous products Structured products Advanced materials Novel active delivery
6
By 2020 the HVE theme will have:-
Established Leeds as the place to go to for high quality research to help manufacturing Both by RCUK/TSB and companies internationally Helped bring new products to market faster through our industrial partners Established at least 3 new strategic partnerships with large multinational companies Brought in over £70m of funds for research Developed a cohort of leading academics in HVE as well as highly sort after graduates Have a strong profile of 4* impact cases for any future REF

Future Areas Opportunities identified in:
Strengthening links to final product formulation Technology Strategy Board priority - National Centre? P&G Strategic Alliance Integration with bioprocessing Sustainable feedstocks agenda EPSRC/BBSRC key areas Links to CoEBio3, Centre for Process Innovation (part of HVM Catalyst)
