THE NEXT-GENERATION LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK: ARE YOU READY? Jack Suess University of Maryland, Baltimore County Bruce Maas University of Wisconsin Madison Bruce-Each of us Introduce ourselves Rob Abel IMS Global Learning Consortium John O’Brien EDUCAUSE

2 What is a Next Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE)?

3 Mostly Rob and Jack, interweave some commentary from John given Malcolm was a co-author. Bruce will add that he signaled this to the early Unizin partners…it was like you had read our minds

5 Interoperability and Integration
Dimensions of NGDLE Five domains of core functionality:  Interoperability and Integration Personalization Analytics, Advising, and Learning Assessment Collaboration Accessibility and Universal Design john

6 The Conclusion: The NGDLE is More Than an LMS
“An early conclusion from our research is that although the NGDLE might include a traditional LMS as a component, it will not itself be a single application like the current LMS or other enterprise applications. Rather, the NGDLE will be an ecosystem of sorts “ john

7 Interoperability and Integration
NGDLE ARCHITECTURE: A FOUNDATION OF INTEROPERABLE SERVICES & DATA THAT ENABLES KEY REQUIREMENTS Analytics, Advising, and Learning Assessment Accessibility and Universal Design Personalization Collaboration Rob/Jack Interoperability and Integration

9 Interop for NGDLE Status
What we have What we need Solid enterprise plug & play foundations: LTI, LIS LTI2 adoption; further CASA development Possible foundation to personalization & accessibility metadata: AfA Adoption of AfA & corresponding web services; Better universal design guidelines & testing Rob/Jack Caliper analytics v1 adoption encouraging; Pilot projects on competencies & eTranscripts Widespread use of Caliper; further development of competency, eTranscript, Badges interoperability

10 How Do You Begin to Put in Place a Next Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE)?
John

11 Enter Unizin Unizin is a consortium of like-minded universities, leveraging and developing educational technologies and practices that are engaging, informed and expansive. Unizin is membership-based and governed by those institutions as a nonprofit 501(c)(3).  It is currently composed of 22 institutions and more than 700,000 students, making it the largest educational system in the United States. 14 Unizin embraces and advances IMS Global standards
Unizin embraces and advances IMS Global standards. Unizin is committed to “open” and supporting universities’ affordability strategies. Unizin is committed to serving teachers and learners, giving them more choice, flexibility and nimbleness. Unizin is committed to providing institutions access to their own data in order to develop teaching and learning insights that can be shared. Bruce

15 Accessibility & Universal Design & Integration
Interoperability Personalization Analytics Collaboration Accessibility & Universal Design & Integration Caliper certification pending (Engage) Engage offers enhanced interactions with students for adaptable teaching Canvas Live Data in Real-Time Oregon St. saved $200K with faster migration to Canvas from Bb New tools build accessibility into the course design process Engage data shows student reading trends Tools support basic LTI integrations Elegant workflows automate universal design Collaborative OER textbook efforts Support an open LMS for greater customization Prototype Sentiment Visualizer Bruce

16 Considering the needs and plans of your institution, how far along do you think we are in the different dimensions of the NGDLE and how do we advance the cause? John

17 How can we begin to work together across world-wide organizations to make this an international effort? Rob

18 What are the first concrete steps we can and should take, together?
Jack
