How And When The Chinese Came To Canada.
In 1858, Chinese immigrants began arriving in the Fraser River valley from San Francisco, as gold prospectors. Baskerville, British Columbia, became the first Chinese community in Canada. By 1860, the Chinese population of Vancouver Island and British Columbia was estimated to be 7,000. Chinese Canadians are one of the largest ethnic groups in the country. Despite their importance to the Canadian economy, including the historic construction of the CPR, many European Canadians were hostile to Chinese immigration, and a prohibitive head tax restricted immigration from 1885 to 1923.

On the Pacific coast was the colony of Vancouver Island. At the time, none of these colonies had immigration restrictions.

Pre-Confederation British North America became home to thousands of people fleeing poverty or oppression in their homelands with hopes to build a better life. In the 1840s, Irish peasants came to Canada in vast numbers to escape a famine that swept Ireland. Year after year, the potato crop failed in Ireland.

How And When The Irish Immigrated To Canada.
The Irish peasants came to North America in overcrowded and unsanitary ships known as "coffin ships." Cabin passenger Robert Whyte recorded the horrifying conditions in the steerage section of a ship. Ships flying the flag of disease were forced to dock at the quarantine station on Grosse le, an island located in the St. Lawrence, downriver from Quebec City.
