1 Aerodynamics The study of the motion of air, particularly when it interacts with a solid object, such as an airplane wing. The least amount of wind resistance.

2 Aerodynamic Forces Thrust Drag Lift Weight

3 Different Types of Drag
Induced Drag- Drag created by the production of lift, always present when you create lift. Parasite Drag- Drag caused by the protrusions, skin friction and pressure. Can be reduced and changed upon design.

4 Two forces crucial for lift
Bernoulli’s Principle- the pressure in a stream of fluid is reduced as the speed of the flow is increased. (80% of lift) Newton’s 3rd Law- every action has an opposite and equal reaction. (20% lift)

5 Skimmer Assembly Follow the step by step assembly Do Not Go Ahead!

6 Supplies Skimmer copied paper Glue stick Masking tape Ruler Scissor
Stapler

7 Skimmer Body Cut out the body on the outside of the bold line
Fold the sides of the skimmer – crisp fold (use ruler) It must sit flat and level on the table

8 Scoop Cut out scoop On the dotted lines provided, fold the sides of the scoop

9 Attaching Scoop Take glue stick and place glue on fold of scoop
Place scoop on the bottom front of the skimmer small side being placed at the front Make sure the scoop is up against the body of the skimmer Sides must match up and flush to each other Use a small piece of tape on both side to keep the scoop in place

10 Back Set Up Go to the back of the skimmer, on the folded line, cut one scissor length on each side Push the back of your skimmer down until it meets up with the bottom of the side Use a piece of tape to hold it in place Cut any remaining tape that hangs off the skimmer

11 Fins Cut out fins Place glue on back side of skimmer Place fins on
Secure with tape Cut any additional tape (remove or wrap on side to secure)

12 Thrust Place a piece of tape in the middle of the skimmer.
On the tape, closely place 3 staples on the tape Place a piece of tape over the staples

13 Testing your skimmer In Edmodo: record your trials.
3 trials- measure distance for each and if you made a modification. You will be graded on your furthest flights distance, if you made modifications and if you personalized your skimmer.
