Cellular Respiration What happens during cellular respiration?
What happens during fermentation?
2
What is Cellular Respiration?
Cellular respiration is the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose Cells break down glucose and other molecules from food in the presence of oxygen, releasing energy
3
Two stages of cellular respiration
First stage occurs in the cytoplasm, glucose is broken down into smaller molecules Second stage happens in mitochondria, requires oxygen, and releases energy
4
Cellular respiration equation
C6H12O6 + 6O CO2 + 6H2O +energy
5
Chemical equation for photosynthesis
6H2O + 6CO C6H12O6 + 6O2
6
What happens during fermentation?
Fermentation is an energy releasing process that does not require oxygen Alcoholic fermentation – yeast – important to bakers and brewers Lactic acid fermentation – sore muscles – used up oxygen faster than it could be replaced
