1 Task c Using, inter alia, the results of the EMEP model, prepare supporting information for the third meeting of Expert Group for reviewing the characteristics of PM as a transboundary pollutant, e.g. contribution to ambient concentrations from national, regional and hemispheric sources, and consider the implications of choosing different particle size fractions; (Co-Chairs to liaise with MSC-W) 1

2 Objective and Status of Activities
Address those fractions and sectors which contribute significantly to transboundary transport transboundary character of PM 10 and PM 2,5 per country has been shown by MSC-W details available from country reports – summary available? in addition: disaggregation according to source sectors 2

3 Open questions related to task c
Which sectors contribute significantly to the transboundary transport of PM fractions? Is there a difference in relevant source sectors between EU and EECCA countries? Can the hemispheric contribution to PM-concentrations be quantified? to be discussed under TOP 5 3

4 Task d (revised) Consider, inter alia, the work of CIAM, MSC-W and CCC on scientific evidence and technical requirements to reduce exposure to primary and secondary PM. Develop, where possible, further technical and non-technical measures to assist parties to reduce PM emissions and exposure and to prepare supporting information for the third meeting of Expert Group (Germany/Co-Chair to liaise with CIAM) 4

5 Objectives ot Task d (1) 1st part to examine options for possible national emission ceilings with a view to the outcome of task c the quality of emission data cost curves as found by TF IAM closely linked to review of multi-pollutant protocol 5

6 Objectives of Task d (2) 2nd part aims to prepare technical annexes
coverng relevant sectors compile mandatory or recommended techniques for PM abatement to be discussed under top 6 6

7 Key questions for the report Item 5 EMEP modelling(1)
Transboundary PM characterisation To what extent is PM a transboundary pollutant? Is PM a hemispheric pollutant? Which components of PM have a significant transboundary element? What are the important emissions sources of transboundary PM? 7

8 Key questions for the report Item 5 EMEP modelling(2)
Emissions Are primary PM emissions important in transboundary pollution? Are PM emissions inventories robust? What are the important uncertainties in PM emissions inventories? How might PM emissions inventories be improved? Are measurements and modelling robust enough to apportion imported and exported PM? 8

9 Key questions for the report Item 6 Mitigation of primary PM emissions
What are the key sources of primary PM emissions? What abatement measures are currently used to mitigate primary emissions of ambient PM? What measures are most suitable for EECCA countries? What abatement measures are available to further reduce ambient concentrations of ambient PM in (a) EECCA and (b) other countries? 9
