Name Rosemary Gravell Affiliation University of Sheffield Lay summary Finding out what expectations people who have had a stroke, traumatic or other brain injury, have about recovery and rehabilitation. Learning whether those expectations affect their approach to rehabilitation. Question/Rationale Some clients following acquired brain injury do not engage with rehabilitation services. This qualitative study aimed to explore the perceptions and expectations people have, following discharge from acute services and before community rehabilitation begins. What did you do? Method step 1 People referred to a community Brain injury rehabilitation service were invited to take part in an interview Method step 2 21 people were interviewed about their experiences, perceptions and expectations. The data was transcribed and analysed inline with grounded theory. Method step 3 One core category and five additional categories were identified. A model was developed from the data, linking these categories What did you find out? A model was developed that suggests that the beliefs and expectations people have about recovery, self-efficacy and rehabilitation efficacy contribute to feelings of hope/despair and to readiness to engage with rehabilitation. Next steps: To develop a clinical protocol based on the model and evaluate its effectiveness and impact on outcomes. Implications: Highlights the importance of considering the beliefs and expectations people bring into the process in order to engage people and improve rehabilitation outcomes.
