Early Life Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, on Thursday, October 31’st, 1451.His father was a poor wool weaver, and Christopher helped him at the loom, but Christopher had a dream. You see, Genoa was an important seaport. This led him to dreaming about going to sea. You can guess where that came from, being around an all time busy seaport.

Later Life Was an Italian explorer. Ferdinand & Isabella
Growing up, Columbus’s dream didn’t change. By now, he was in Spain. Eventually, he got permission from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Catholic rulers of Spain, and became an Italian explorer. Why did he need permission from them? Because they were the ones who provided the money to make this all a reality.

First Journey At First Told NO! Took 6 Years To Get Permission
When he first asked to go on this journey, they said no, because they were in the middle of the Spanish Reconquista, and had lots of debt to pay. When he asked again six years later, they had won the Reconquista, and that’s when they agreed. Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain on August 3rd, during Shortly after midnight on October 12’th, 1492, one of the sailors on the Pinta sighted land. It was Paria Peninsula, which is present day Venezuela. In fact, Christopher Columbus first landed in South America, not North America. At First Told NO! Ships He sailed on the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
Sailing for Spain, he brought along three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, who was captained by Christopher himself. The Nina was captained by Vicente Yanez Pinzon, and the Pinta captained by Martin Alonzo Pinzon. They had about 90 crew members. The names of the ships we know are not there original names. The Pinta means “Painted One”, but the original given name is unknown. The Nina was also a nickname, but it’s real name is also not known for certain. The Santa Maria, however, was originally named Santa Clara. He sailed on the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Columbus was the captain of the Santa Maria. The captains of the Nina and the Pinta were brothers. About 90 crewmembers!

Obstacles Like most every explorer and person, Christopher set out on this voyage for a reason: to find a faster route from Spain to India so they could earn money by trading faster. But of course, there were some obstacles along the way. On the way back, he was abandoned by half his crew. The islanders (Which he called Indians because he thought he was on the islands west of India and did not know that he was by North and South America). Refused to back him up with food at one point, and on Christmas eve during 1492, a cabin boy crashed the Santa Maria’s flagship into a coral reef!

Behind The Scenes Secrets
Jews and Moors were being forced to go against their religion. Christopher Columbus tried to help Sephardic Jews. Most modern day jews live in Israel. Believe it or not, the Jews were tied to Christopher Columbus. The Spanish Reconquista was causing Jews and Moors a lot of worry. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand thought they were “saving their souls” by turning everyone, no matter what religion, Catholic. The Jews there were called Sephardic Jews. Sephardic Jews played a bigger part in Christopher Columbus motive than you think. Recent studies show that Christopher Columbus might have even been jewish. Part of his motive to explore was to find a safer place for Sephardic Jews to settle. Most modern day jews have settled in Israel, or the promised land, and there are some jews sprinkled throughout the rest of the world.
