The growing population of Europe led to the need for trade Most of the spices came from the Moluccas, present day Indonesia Arab and Italian merchants controlled trade

He was Portuguese He left on September 20, 1519 from Spain He cruised the east coast looking for a passage to the Pacific Ocean They braved storms but eventually found the what came to be known as the Straight of Magellan

Carrying On Magellan’s crew wanted to turn back after their discovery
Magellan wanted to push on to the Indies The Pacific Ocean was way larger than he anticipated It took them four months to get there. They arrived at the Philippines

Death Magellan tried to fight some Philippines and was killed
The 18 survivors of his crew returned to Spain They were the first to circumnavigate the globe, or sail all the way around it
