I will: Identify unsafe practices and be able to avoid them. Demonstrate safety at the barn, greenhouse, and classroom. Seed Questions:

Types of Farm Accidents
2 million youth under the age of 20 are exposed to farm related safety hazzards. Most farm accidents occur to people 25 and under and 65 and older. Why?

General Animal Rules Do not work with animal for which you have not received permission. Work in teams or groups. If you open a gate, close it. Never leave animal unattended. Always remain calm around them. Be gentle when handling them. Wear closed toed shoes.

General Animal Safety Never take animals out of their area.
If an animal becomes aggressive, let me know. Always wash your hands with soap and water after handling animals.

Cattle Safety Rules Know the type and temperament of cattle you are working with. Make sure all pens, chutes, gates, etc. are working properly. Always remain alert around bulls. Watch for warning signs of aggression – stomping snorting, and lowering the head.

Cattle Safety Rules If an animal has horns, watch out.
Respect the flight zone of the animal. Make sure a cow is not in position to hurt you when you work with her calf. Be cautious around cattle and feed. Always have cattle tied or in a chute when working them.

Horse Safety Rules Learn the personality and habits of the horse you are working with. Remain calm. Do not yell or scare the horse. Be sure the horse can see you at all times. If you approach a horse from its blind spot it may spook. Walk to the horses side when leading it. Never wrap a lead rope around you

Horse Safety Always use a quick release knot.

Horse Safety Rules Always stand to the side when brushing the tail.

Horse Safety When walking behind a horse – go out of kicking range or place your hand on them to let them know you are there. When picking up a horses hooves- rub your hand down their leg and then lift.

Swine Safety Never separate swine who are fighting without using a cutting board. When restraining swine always use a snout snare.

While handling sheep do not stand over them. They have potential to jump up.

Clean Up Safety Put all tools away at the end of the class period.
Do not horseplay. Do not work with tools for which you have not received instruction. Use each tool for its specific function. Wipe up spilled liquid at once.

Clean Up Safety Get help in handling long or heavy pieces of material.
Report all injuries to the teacher, no matter how slight. Keep hair away from moving parts. Be alert to help others spot safety hazards and improper procedures. Be careful in handling and storing materials
