14 Lesson Plan for Year 7 Refugee Week (W/C 15th June)
You may consider running this over 2 lessons. Lesson/PowerPoint order Introduction: Discuss some ideas of what home means to them. The first few slides show examples with captions to discuss; family, friends, feeling safe, loved, comfy, gardens, furniture, modern technology, good food, pets, pampering, movies, sweets, celebrations, birthdays, leisure activities, music….. Artists inspiring the project: Kurt Schwitters, a collage artist and refugee during World War 2 Becky Adams, a contemporary collage artist based on home related themes Main Task: Design and make the front of their postcard. Students need to write a sentence or 2 about what home means to them and then address the postcard to someone in their family or a close friend. Reflection/plenary: Kurt Schwitters was a refugee. Questions for the students to consider: How would you feel if…… 1. You had to leave your home? 2. Some of your family were left behind? 3. You could only take a couple of items with you? 4. You were sending your postcard to a loved one from a strange country? 5. You didn’t have a choice? End of lesson: Show slides of refugees and explain that sometimes people have to leave their homes through no fault of their own. 14

27 English I now know what refugees feel like when they have to leave their home, what they miss and what has stuck in their memory. Everyone should be equal and treated with respect.

28

29 What’s the impact? They are taking our jobs Miss!
They are only coming over here for “free money” We don’t want them here!
