Biography Herbert Spencer was born on April 27, 1820 in Derby, England and died December 8, 1903 Out of nine siblings he was the only one to survive to adulthood He trained in civil engineering for railways but turned to journalism political writing in his early 20s His first book was titled Social Statics: The Conditions Essential to Human Happiness in which he predicted that humanity would eventually adapt to the requirements of living in society. He began experiencing mental problems later in life and solemnly went out in public He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902

Education Spencer had a informal, undisciplined education, but he was influenced by individualism His father was a school teacher From , he worked for “The Economist” He used something called “Social Hygiene” Herbert wrote many thought provoking books. Social Statistics The Principles of Psychology 9 volumes of A System of Synthetic Philosophy Influenced many other people in the United States to practice sociology.

Research History Most of his knowledge was gained from reading and word of mouth When working for the local paper he would try to gain knowledge from the articles that were being printed Herbert conducted research on the topic of sociology which led to the publishing of the following books Essential to Human Happiness Education The Data of Ethics The Man Versus the State

Contributions to Sociology
Spencer made valuable contributions to early sociology He attempted to introduce some of Darwin’s ideas into sociology Developed the idea of two types of societies Militant and Industrial He faced contradiction from many other sociologists.

Why Is He In The Hall of Fame
Herbert wrote many books that contributed to the field of sociology First philosopher to sell over a million copies of his books in his lifetime Inspired many individuals mainly in China and Japan Developed and applied evolutionary theory to philosophy, psychology, and the study of society Was nominated for a Nobel peace prize in 1902

Something Interesting
Herbert developed mental problems and suffered for a large part of his late adult life Came up with the term “survival of the fittest “ to help describe natural selection He lived to be 83 years old
