1 GKHS Course Selection Information 2017-2018 Class of 2018

2 Graduation Requirements
Eng Lang Arts– 4 credits Social Studies – 3 credits Science – 2 credits Math – 3 credits Algebra 1 Geometry Advanced Algebra Health/PE Credits Health 0.5 PE 1.5 Health/PE 0.5 Fine Arts – 1 credit Occupational/Vocational Education (CTE) – 1 credit Career Education & Culminating Project – 1 credit Electives – 5 credits Pass ELA, Math and Science Assessments Careers IS a graduation requirement so encourage students to complete their work and pass the class! Economics, World Studies, US Studies, and Civics equal the 3 credits of Social Studies required to graduate. If students did not take or did not pass Economics in 9th grade, they may take Sociology, Psychology, or AP Psychology. If students do not pass the Biology End of Course Assessment this school year, they may be placed in a Biology COE class next year. Careers/CP IS a graduation requirement so encourage students to complete their work and pass the class!

3 4-Year College Entrance Requirements
English – 4 credits Math – 3 credits (minimum of Algebra 1, Geometry, AND Adv Algebra) Senior Year Quantitative Course – 1 year Social Studies – 3 credits Science – 2 credits lab science, one credit of Algebra based science (Chemistry or Physics) Fine Arts – 1 credit World Languages – 2 credits of the same language ACT/SAT score (Take this spring!) Students must earn a minimum of three credits from the courses listed above, each year (9 through 12). 2-year and 4-year colleges want students to take math all four years of high school. We encourage college bound students to take more than two years of science, especially if they are looking at science based careers. Juniors should take the SAT/ACT this spring. Credit Retrieval GK Online Credit Retrieval (FuelEd) $50 per 0.5 credit ($25 reduced lunch, $10 free lunch) ELA, Social Studies, Science, Spanish 1, Health GK ALEKS Math Credit Retrieval $70 per class ($50 reduced lunch, $30 free lunch) Algebra 1 through Pre-Calculus Careers Credit Retrieval $30 BYU Online Approximately $150 per 0.5 credit Core classes and elective classes 7th Period Class Next Year Summer School information available in April See your counselor for enrollment information/paperwork.

6 Advanced Placement AP students will take an AP test in May – approximately $95 AP test fee. (First AP test is free!) Interested students must read and sign the AP contract. Scores of 3,4, or 5 may earn college credit or waivers at college level. AP is a predictor of completion of a 4-year college degree. Don’t take too many AP and/or challenging classes! A student’s first AP test is free. (BSD pays for the first AP test for each student.)

Earn college credit from the University of Washington. Cost: approximately $370 GKHS Courses: The Biology of Addiction and the Brain Computer Science

10 Pierce County Skills Center
Technical programs to earn college and high school credit. Attend GK 3 class periods and attend PCSC 3 class periods. CC Course Planner – Select PCSC and choose GK courses for next year. PCSC applications are online. Will be accepted beginning March 1. PCSC Open House – February 9, 5:00–6:30 pm

12 Running Start ACCUPLACER – $15 at Pierce College; must score into college level reading & writing CC Course Planner – Select Running Start and choose GK courses for next year. Student Running Start Meeting – March 6, during study support in the auditorium Parent Running Start Meeting – March 7, 6:30 PM at SLHS. 12

13 12th Grade Courses English Language Arts 12 OR AP Literature & Composition (Students who earn a 3 or 4 on the ELA SBA will be enrolled in AP Literature.) Civics (one semester) OR AP US Government/Politics (all year) Math Electives/courses needed for graduation/college entrance Students who earn a 3 or 4 on the ELA SBA will be enrolled in AP Literature. Students enrolled in AP Gov or another AP class may opt out of AP Lit. 13

14 Career Cruising Select your courses in the Course Planner section of Career Cruising. Make sure to choose alternate courses. Have your parents and teachers help you choose your courses. Courses must be submitted by February 22. Go to GK website. Select Academics. Click on Counseling Center. Scroll down and find the Career Cruising link. Login to Career Cruising.

15 Course Planner Signature Form
Upload Course Planner Signature Form and complete CC Course Planner by February 22. Sign the AP Contract if signing up for an AP class. YOU MUST HAVE A PARENT SIGNATURE ON YOUR FORM PRIOR TO UPLOADING TO CAREER CRUISING!!!!! Counselors will choose courses for students who have not completed CC Course Planner and uploaded a Course Planner Signature form by February 22.
