Focus: Students will identify clear ways to set goals.
Goal: To look towards my future and set goals for myself. Standard: NHES#1- Health Promotion Warm-Up: Interview your peer, record their answer, and be prepared to report back to whole class. What important information comes from a sperm cell? What happens to an unfertilized egg cell? Create a critical thinking question.

Notes: Setting Goals for Adolescence As adolescents become able to think practically, they become more concerned about the future. They are also able to set and achieve goals. Goal setting is a skill. The more people practice, the more skillful they become. When adolescents have the opportunity to learn this critical skill at an early age, goal setting can help avoid some of the risks of adolescence. Goal setting can provide motivation to avoid early sexual behavior and the risks that go with it, including unintended pregnancy, HIV infection, and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Reach Your Goals Set your goal. Establish a plan. Consider barriers. Suggest solutions. Identify a reward. Evaluate your progress.

Ready, Set, Goal! Set your goal. I will work hard on my health project and turn it in on time. Establish a plan. Talk to my teacher about the project. Find information on the Web. Work one hour every day on my project. Consider barriers. Watching TV instead of working on my project. Getting to use the computer. Having the art supplies I need. Suggest solutions. Work on my project after dinner each night. Get a time to use the computer from the school librarian. Ask my dad to take me to the store on Saturday. Identify a reward. I will ask my dad if I can have a friend over when the project’s turned in.

My Goals Directions: Write a specific goal for each of these circumstances. 1. A goal for tomorrow: 2. A goal for next week: 3. A goal for next year: 4. A health-related goal:

Tasha’s Goal Directions: Read the situation. Use what you have learned about setting goals to help Tasha. Tasha lives and breathes soccer. She is on the Eastside Middle School soccer team with her best friend, Lucy. On weekends, when Tasha is not sleeping or eating, she is on the soccer field. Tasha and her best friend just heard about the soccer camp that will be offered in the summer. One of the best soccer players in the United States will be coaching at the camp. The camp is expensive. Tasha’s parents have said they can pay part of the registration fee. Tasha will have to find a way to pay the remaining $ if she wants to go to camp. The registration deadline is four months away. Tasha gets a small allowance every week, but it won’t be enough to save $ by the deadline. 1. What is Tasha’s goal? 2. How can Tasha achieve her goal? Use the goal-setting steps to help Tasha. 3. What are the health-related aspects of Tasha’s goal?
