Biomass Energy Student Work

How it is used Biomass generally serve as a substitute for fossil fuels. It is generally blended with petroleum to serve as gas. It remote parts of the world, biomass is used to heat houses and cook food.

Where it is Produced Biomass energy, due to nature of production, can be produced anywhere with sufficient trash, flora, and fauna.

How Biomass Energy Is Produced
There are three main methods that biomass energy is created: Thermal Thermochemical Biochemical

Thermal At biomass power plants, biomass is burned in a boiler to produce high-pressure steam, which, in turn drives a turbine to generate electricity. Oldest and most common method used.

Thermochemical By heating plant matter, it is possible to break down biomass into gases, liquids, and solids. Then can be processed into gas and liquid fuels. Ex. Methane and Alcohol

Biochemical Adding bacteria to biomass liquids causes biomass materials to change into alcohol. A similar process is used to turn agricultural products into ethanol which is then mixed with gasoline to make an ethanol-gasoline blend. When bacteria is used in biomass process, methane is produced.

Pros and Cons of Biomass Energy
truly renewable fuel low cost to produce lower carbon cleaner than fossil fuels abundant amount Cons requires large area of land requires water for process some fuels are seasonal can lead to deforestation
