Work in groups, but independently write in your journals Make a list of what elements of setting we’ve come across so far (Location, Time, Environment) Consider how elements of setting are revealed in the opening chapters. How do these elements help develop the voice and characters of Huck, Miss Watson, Pap, Jim?

Comprehension and Connection questions
Answer each of the following questions in full paragraphs (5-8 sentences with topic sentences, claims, evidence, and reasoning.): What are Huck’s feelings about his adoption by the Widow Douglas and her sister, Miss Watson? As a motherless boy, does he need their influence? Huck’s upbringing is a concern in the book. What do we know about him so far that has shaped his personality and moral system? What do other characters teach Huck and how do they wish to change him? (consider his interactions with either or all: Miss Watson, Pap, Judge Thatcher)
