2 Lesson Objectives Outline the major international sporting events.
Consider some of the other high profile events Look specifically at the Olympic games and the advantages and disadvantages of hosting the games.

3 World championships The majority of sports provide a world championship for their particular event. Can you think of at least 3 examples???

5 Football – World Cup. Called the Jules Rimet Trophy which started in 1930 and is held every 4 years. (Maradonna clip) Why was it not held in 1942 and 1946? The rugby world cup – started in 198, held every 4 years, known as the William Webb Ellis cup. Next one 2011 –in NZ (Jonny Wilkinson clip) Cricket world cup – one day and comp. Athletics world championships– started in 1991 – every 4 years in between the Olympics. Formula one world championships – different to the other events as it tours the world and lasts for several months. It is an annual event.

6 High Profile Events Not all sports have world championships.
Can you think of any high profile sporting events that are very popular in the media? Wimbledon – world famous tournament started in 1877. Super Bowl – the most watched US tele broadcast of the year.(A. Football clip) Football leagues – Premiership One off events – Boxing (M. Ali clip)

8 Exam Tip You will not be asked about any specific event or competition but might be tested on what makes something high profile and to explain why something is so popular. So.. Why are international sporting events so common and popular? ANS – Profitable/ aim of all sports people to play at that level/ to be part of history/ exciting/ usually knockout comps/be part of national identity.

9 OLYMPIC GAMES

10 Olympic Games Probably the highest profile sporting event to take place. First held in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. IOC was founded in 1894 and first summer OG was held in Athens 1896. Held every 4 years. There is a lengthy and complicated selection process for who hosts the games.

11 OLYMPIC CONTROVERSY

12 Olympic Controversy Berlin 1936 – Adolph Hitler used the games for propaganda purposes to promote his racist views of Jewish and Black people. Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals to Hitler's obvious disapproval. Munich 1972 – marred by a terrorist attack on the Israeli team in the Olympic village Montreal 1976 – SA were banned due to aparteid. Many African countries and NZ boycotted the games. The financial cost meant that it took Montreal 30 years to pay off the debt.

The likelihood of making a profit through sponsorship, media rights and merchandise The provision of updated or new facilities Raising the profile and reputation of the hosts in the eyes of the world

15 Disadvantages Security and the risk of terrorist attack
Boycotts and protests for political reasons High costs and expenses to provide facilities and security. Taxes usually go up to pay for the games.

16 Exam Question What would be the benefits to a country hosting a major sports festival such as the Olympic Games? (Total 8 marks)

17 Answer Benefits such as: • increased interest in sport;
• positive attitudes inspired by success; • greater motivation to actively take part; • sense of status; • improved facilities for training and competition; • improved access to and co-ordination of facilities; • employment opportunities; • increased number of coaches/officials; • increased number of events; • raising standards of performance; • producing the elite stars of the future; • prioritises political support for P.E. and sport; • home advantage . support/conditions . for winning medals; • legacy of facilities for the future; • increased income into general business from visitors; • regeneration of deprived areas; • new infra-structure.
