Identifying Variables Research Question and Hypothesis
2
Question 1: The temperature of water was measured at different depths of a pond. What is the independent, Dependent and controlled variables?
3
What are the variables in this investigation?
Independent variable – depth of the water Dependent variable – temperature Controlled variable – thermometer used, pond
4
Question 2: Students of different ages were given the same puzzle to put together. They were timed to see how long it took to finish the puzzle. What is the independent, dependent and controlled variableS?
5
What are the variables in this investigation?
Independent variable – different ages of students Dependent variable – the time taken to solve the puzzle Controlled variable – the puzzle
6
QUESTION 3: THE HIGHER THE TEMPERATURE OF WATER, THE FASTER AN EGG WILL BOIL. WHAT IS THE INDEPENDENT, DEPENDENT CONTROLLED VARIABLES?
7
What are the variables in this investigation?
Independent variable – temperature of water Dependent variable – time to cook Controlled variable – type of egg, size of egg, amount of water

Research Question – I.v. and D.v.
Change these statements to research questions. 1.Some people work better in the morning, and other people work better in the afternoon. 2. Animals behave in strange ways before an earthquake. 3. Each year when the weather gets cold, birds fly to warmer regions.

1. What causes some people to work
Research question 1. What causes some people to work better in the morning and some in the afternoon? 2. What are the effects or earthquakes on animal behavior? 3. What is the relationship between cold weather and birds flying to warmer regions?
10
If people are given different tasks to complete,
Hypothesis If people are given different tasks to complete, then most people will work better at each task in the morning because they are more alert and refreshed in the morning. If shaking of an earthquake is simulated then one can observe animals behaving strangely because the vibrations in the ground agitate them.

If the weather gets cold then you will observe
Hypothesis If the weather gets cold then you will observe birds flying to warmer regions because birds follow the warm weather.
