1 Residential Internet Performance: A view from the Gateway
Renata Teixeira (Inria Paris) with Srikanth Sundaresan (ICSI), Nick Feamster (Princeton) Anna-Kaisa Pietilainen, Michele Pittoni (Inria Paris)

2 Possible measurements points in the home
Internet End-devices Observe poor user experience But, have limited view of the home network and portability is an issue Home gateway Ideally placed between home devices and Internet, always on But, have limited resources and deployment is harder

3 Gateway deployments Breadth: The FCC/SamKnows study
Last Mile Internet SamKnows/BISmark Nearby Server Breadth: The FCC/SamKnows study 7,800 gateways, 18 ISPs, multiple service plans Depth: The BISmark study 120+ gateways in 28 countries worldwide, periodic and on-demand measurements

4 Interpreting throughput results

5 Short-term throughput different from sustainable throughput

6 Are downstream throughput bottlenecks in the ISP or the home wireless network?
User’s traffic Internet Home or Access (HoA) algorithm Inspect packets traversing gateway Packet inter-arrival time to detect access bottlenecks RTT in home wireless to detect wireless bottlenecks

7 Prevalence of last-mile bottlenecks (2,652 homes in FCC, Nov 2014)
Access link Wireless with last-mile bottlenecks Fraction of tests Downstream access capacity bins (Mbps)

8 Challenges for data visualization and aggregation
A single metric of throughput may not be sufficient Short-term versus sustained throughput Consistency of throughput over time Can we identify bottlenecks? Multiple bottlenecks possible Home network, server, user’s device Select tests when access link is bottleneck Can we compare results of different tools? What is the type of vantage point? How many vantage points per region? Which metric is being measured? Can we compare measurements at coarse grain?
