1 Nutrition 13 Principles

2 Three things that affect food choices
Culture Economic status Impulse

3 Carbohydrates A nutrient found in a lot of foods that provide us with our main source of energy.

4 Two classifications of Carbs
SIMPLE- Sugars Found in fruit, juices, candy, etc… COMPLEX- Starches Found in bread, pasta, rice, etc…

5 Carbohydrate breakdown
It takes longer for your body to break down complex carbs. Therefore, they are less likely to trigger a spike in your blood sugar level.

6 Simple carbs compared to added sugar
An apple contains natural sugar and is therefore easier to digest. A cookie contains added sugar which is a foreign substance to your body.

7 Added sugars Added sugars are usually converted and stored as body fat.

8 Hunger and Appetite HUNGER- The biological need for food.
APPETITE- Your mind’s craving for food.

9 Appetite triggers Smell Taste Sight Thought

10 Top 5 mindless eating habits
Out of the bag Multi-tasking Eating in groups Watching TV and eating Plate sizes

11 Creatures of habit Our bodies get used to a consistent regimen.
Anything that strays away from that regimen now and then will unlikely have an affect on us.

12 Artificial Sweeteners
Studies have shown that artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Nutrisweet and others can disrupt our taste buds. This can lead to overeating.

13 Food industry today Everything is about mass production
More hormones added to our food. Animals are sped through the maturation process. More emphasis on quick and convenient.

14 One simple theory Replace the whites with the browns
White bread  Whole wheat White rice  Whole grain White Sugar  Brown sugar White pasta  Whole wheat pasta
