The American White Pelican

What it looks like It is a large bird. It’s wing span is 3 m. It’s beak is 38 cm. It weighs 10 kg. It has white feathers on its’ body with black tips on the wings and yellow beak with feet. It has a pouched beak that they dip and scoop up fish with. It holds 10 litres of water and fish!

How it moves It is a strong flyer and a good glider. It takes off quickly and flies at 40 km per hour. It is also a good swimmer.

What it eats It eats fish such as minnows, suckers, frogs, and salamanders. It eats 4-5 pounds of fish each day.

Where it lives In the summer it lives in fresh water lakes but in the winter it lives in sea coast lakes. Its’ habitat has reeds, small branches, water plants, and grass.

What it does in winter It goes to a warm place in winter.

Life Cycle It lays one or two eggs Mom or Dad sits on them for 30 days
The babies eat from the pouch A group is called a pod

Other information It puts oil on its’ feathers to waterproof itself so it won’t sink It has a bump on its’ beak so it can find a mate.
