3 Thinking outside the box
Welcome to Futurewise Futurewise is an information and guidance programme that helps you understand more about yourself so you can make confident and informed decisions about your future Thinking outside the box Lets now look at FNG. This is a programme to help you to explore the world of work in 2013 and beyond. You may have some career ideas already but there are many, many possibilities. Often we make decisions with limited information. For instance, if all your family have worked in XXX then that might be the only thing you have thought about for yourself. It’s hard at your age to choose what to do. It’s even harder sometimes to find objective information on the options. Should you pursue your interests, take account of your abilities, find a job that suits your personality? FNG will give you enough objective information about yourself to help you to look at a range of possibilities. So think outside the box before deciding.

4 Career planning… Knowing yourself is a great start to planning your career but it does not stop here. You now need to look into the possibilities and your options. This might include subjects for next year, choices about university or apprenticeships, and longer term ambitions. With those in mind you can then look back through your report to see if there are particular strengths you might use in certain areas.

details theories, research, science business, managing, influencing creative, artistic, self-expression Interests based on Holland Theory with a global reach & is the most researched theory available. There are links between Holland and Personality…with accurate to personality types who have preference for certain types of jobs. Hexagonal model & theme ‘opposites’ - explain how Holland works with majority of people having neighbouring interests. However it is not impossible to have very different interests and a diverse range of career options. teamwork, helping, instructing

11 Try this Which feels more natural? Fold your arms
Now fold them the other way Which feels more natural? Explaining how Type preferences work. Introduce personality with preferences exercises. Ask students to fold their arms - then ask them to fold the other way. If suitable you could then ask them to stand up and without falling over stand on one leg – then swap to the other. Explain that although they can do both (cross arms one way then the other and/or stand on one leg then the other) – that one will be their natural preference. It is the same with personality. “In the personality assessment we are trying to find out what your natural preference is, which may be different from what you do in certain situations. Think about this…how do you PREFER to sit on a chair? Do you sit differently when you are working at school, to when you are at home on your own? Your natural preference may be one way, but you CAN sit differently depending on how formal the situation is.” “Think about how your behaviour changes depending on who you are with. Do you behave in the same way when you are on your own with friends as you do when you are at school with a teacher in the room?” “Answer the personality assessment by thinking about what is most comfortable for you, not necessarily what is expected from you. So in other words, if you had a choice which option feels right for you most of the time.”

Extroversion Introversion Extraversion/Introversion= a difference in focus for energy and reality Some people thrive when there is a lot going on, when there is plenty of chance for discussion, interaction and activity which keeps them busy. (E) Others enjoy a much quieter environment where there is a chance to internalise, reflect and create their own internal reality. (I)

14 What do you see? Sensing/iNtuition = different ways of seeing the world Optional exercise: Get students to describe the picture to a partner S = concentrates initially on details/facts/constituent parts N= explores the big picture/ imagines/looks at potential

The Thinking person looks at information and decides if it is true or false The Feeling person looks at information and decides if it is good or bad, beautiful or ugly Thinking and Feeling preferences are different ways of making a decision (T) Prefer logical decisions with a clear rationale justifying the decision. Dr Spock style (F) Do not depend on logic but match their decisions to their values. Captain James T Kirk style

16 Your room? ? ? Judging & Perceiving = different ways of managing the world around us. J like to know what is coming, they anticipate, plan and organise & may not like surprises P have a more responsive approach, flexible and spontaneous but may leave things to the last minute.

Understanding our personality abilities, interests and preferences help us to understand how we interact with others, use our creativity, plan, make decisions and get results It impacts on our learning style and influences our interests, subject and career choices.
