1 Data Architecture World Class Operations - Impact Workshop

2 Why should data be treated as an asset?
Historically, data is the least governed organizational asset. Changing this mindset and managing data appropriately will increase its value. Non-existent or initial approaches to data can cause: Low data quality, which can lead to inefficient operations. Increased risk of data loss or data breaches. Low data trust throughout the organization, which can lead to business decisions being made based on feeling rather than empirical data. Increased instances of rogue data being used. Treating data as an asset results in: Transparency about where data sits, how it is used, and who is using it. Increased data trust, which improves decision making. Improved availability – data is available to the right people at the right time. Tight data lifecycles. A thorough understanding of any gaps or issues that exist, and the steps needed to mitigate them.

3 Use data architecture to improve data quality, integrity, and security, now and into the future
Data architecture provides a holistic view of enterprise data repositories, the technology that enables and manages them, the governance processes that are over them, the people that manage them, and the principles, policies, and guidelines relevant to an organization’s business and IT goals.

11 Data Architecture Workshop Primary Deliverable: Communicate with the organization about the implementation of data procedures. Assessment of organization’s approach to data. Detailed analysis of perceived data maturity. Overview of data audit. Creation of a target data architecture. Strategy planning for creating initiatives and communicating them to the organization. Data Asset Management Assessment Data Source Inventory Data Architecture Initiative Planning

12 Data Architecture Workshop Core Deliverables
14 key deliverables will be completed during the workshop: Data Asset Value and Risk Assessment Assess the importance of quality, security, availability, and compliance with regard to your data. Set the bar for where your organization needs to be when it comes to these four categories. Data Asset Management Assessment Discuss the organization’s approach to data. Determine where people believe the organization is and where they think it should be on the data maturity model. Data Context Mapping Determine the data sources that fall within the data audit’s scope. Interview Guide Determine what information needs to be gathered during the interviews. Ensure that the right questions are being asked of the right people. Data Source Inventory Record information about all the data sources that are part of the business function being audited. Make note of data quality, security, compliance, and availability issues that are identified during the interviews or in the IT Report. Root Cause Analysis Identify major data issues and determine what the primary causes are. 1 4 5 2 3 6

13 Data Architecture Workshop Core Deliverables
14 key deliverables will be completed during the workshop: Data Architecture Initiative Planning Create a high-level plan by identifying gaps in your architecture and addressing them with building blocks. Data Architecture Principles Ensure your organization has data architecture principles in place. Issue Reconciliation Ensure that the target architecture addresses and reduces issue areas. Initiative Documentation Map out initiatives to weigh benefits, payoffs, and cost. Prioritized initiatives Taking IT and business drivers into account, determine the order in which you will deploy building blocks. Initiative timeline Ensure that over time, initiatives contribute to the organization’s advancement of data management. Metric Tracking Determine initiative success by setting and tracking metrics. Communication Plan Ensure all audiences have been identified and the correct method of communicating with them has been selected. 7 11 8 12 9 13 10 14
