MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly, 2005-137
Description of Event On DOY 2005/137 at 01:07:30, during the 20W portion of the SRCA Full Spatial calibration, there was an abnormal output from the lamps. Initial SRCA Setup commands executed as expected Calibration’s 16 minute warm up executed as expected 30W calibration (10 minutes) executed as expected With 2 minutes remaining in the 20W calibration (10 minutes), lamp currents and voltages went to zero 10W calibration (10 minutes) did not execute as expected, lamp currents and voltages did not rise above zero 1W calibration (10 minutes) did not execute as expected, lamp currents and voltages did not rise above zero SRCA Slit and Filter movements did execute as expected through entire calibration Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,

Current Understanding of Possible Cause(s)
Lamp Failure? Unlikely that one or both of the 10W lamps #3 and #4 failing would effect the unpowered 10W lamp #1 and 1W lamp #5 (primary 1W). It is possible that one (or more) of the lamps began to fail causing the suspected Over Voltage protection elaborated on below. Total SRCA Failure? No. Continued functioning of the SRCA motors and active thermal sensors indicate the SRCA is functioning (at some level). Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,
8
Current Understanding of Possible Cause(s) (continued)
Lamp Over Voltage tripped protection circuitry/software? Most likely explanation – supported by SBRS review of symptoms Over Voltage protection cuts power to the lamp ring effecting all lamps, the remaining functions of the SRCA are unaffected fits observed telemetry Awaiting SBRS confirmation of Over Voltage Protection sequence Over Voltage protection is a soft lock up, it is reset when power to the SRCA is cycled SRCA B is currently off (as per final command in the CP Macro 23) Erik Johnson (SRCA designer) spoke with Joe Auchter (both of SBRS) and described a possible failure of an SRCA lamp beginning with a rise in current and voltage that could trip the over voltage protection. MCST noted a small variance in SRCA lamp output during the 2005/123 Radiometric test, they were awaiting the 2005/137 test for additional data Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,
9
Immediate Plan of Action
Assess state of health of the instrument Telemetry nominal - subsystems show no signs of problems Explore scenarios of SRCA lamps being disabled while remaining SRCA equipment remains functional Inquiry requested of SBRS regarding this issue Joe Auchter is reviewing the SRCA Lamp Over Voltage Protection Software Latest input from SBRS suggest the symptoms seen are that which are expected of an Over-Voltage Shutdown Determine impact on science data from the loss of the planned SRCA Full Spatial Calibration and any future SRCA calibrations Inquiry requested of MCST regarding this issue MCST indicates no impact to Science Data from an SRCA loss SRCA is used to trend and characterize, not for calibration of science data Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,
10
Immediate Plan of Action (continued)
Suspension of future SRCA activities until course of resolution has been determined. The next regularly scheduled SRCA activity was to be an SRCA Full Radiometric calibration in the first week of June. MCST has indicated that there will be no adverse effect on the characterization of the instrument from not performing this activity Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,

Recovery Sequence - Goals
To test each of the SRCA lamps; individually and under increasing load configurations. The lamp combinations used for the 20W and 30W configurations shall be those used for nominal activities. Monitoring and commanding in real time the power on, setup/configuration, and toggling on and off of the various SRCA components and lamps. Monitoring of real time telemetry indicating success or failure of aforementioned goals as well as detecting possible lamp shutdown should an over voltage protection circuit trip occur. Pause Between Contacts: ... after "Turn off ___ mode" Turn off SRCA mod_srca_pm_off() ... new contact "Configure ..." will turn on the SRCA again. Additionally, place an MCL SRCA Off activity after every contact planned to have SRCA activities. This protects against loss of contact prior to being able to power off the SRCA MOD_SRCA_OFF Runs MODIS CP Macro #27 “SRCA Off” Completely benign if the SRCA is already powered off Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,

Recovery Sequence – Constraints
Constraints for execution: No other running MODIS Activities Day/Night? (SRCA calibrations are nominally run at S/C Night to reduce stray light noise) Execution preferred during a TDRSS contact to avoid conflicts with science data playbacks in ground contacts. Each “block” of lamp settings requires approximately minutes of execution and observation time There are SIX “blocks” of lamp settings SRCA turn off procedure requires approximates 2 minutes SRCA Off MCL SCS must be scheduled for any contact executing real time SRCA commanding Revision 3 MODIS FM1 (Aqua) SRCA Anomaly,

Lamp Usage Statistics During the SRCA Full Spatial calibration, the SRCA utilizes three 10W lamps and one 1W lamp, as well as the IR source. The 10W lamps are used for 30W, 20W, and 10W light sources, and the 1W for a 1W light source as follows: 30W = Lamps 1, 3, 4 20W = Lamps 3, 4 10W = Lamp 1 1W = Lamp 5 anomaly happened 8 minutes into 20W portion, lamps being used were 3 and 4. Lamp Usage Statistics (continued)
Lamp usage (as of 2005/137): Lamp 1 – hours (45.6 on orbit) Lamp 2 – hours (12.3 on orbit) Was taken offline due to lamp fluctuations, testing done on 2003/ Lamp 3 – hours (27.2 on orbit) Lamp 4 – 82.5 hours (24.8 on orbit) Previous backup lamp, now in full use since Lamp 2 was taken offline Lamp 5 – hours (10 on orbit) Lamp 6 – hours (1.8 on orbit) Backup 1W lamp Each 10W lamp has a limited life of 500 hours Each 1W lamp has a limited life of 5000 hours If it was an over voltage shutdown, logic points towards lamp 3 being the culprit since it has many more hours on it than lamp 4.
