Magnet maintenance program
MNC magnet maintenance program in IEF Beam operation: intervention 24h/24 (piquet + experts) Short TS: systematic visual inspections; corrective maintenance Year End TS: previous + audio-visual inspection in pulsed mode; electrical tests; preventive maintenance; small consolidations Long Shutdowns: previous + thermal inspections; large consolidations; major activities in highly radioactive areas Associated with suitable spare policy Continuous refurbishment of large magnet families with few spares Certification program to prepare spares “ready to install” Ultimate goal: mitigate MTTR and MTBF J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017

Inspection “Magnet Patrol” (PLAN 10987)
Magnet test campaign Inspection “Magnet Patrol” (PLAN 10987) To detect coil movements in main magnets and transfer line quadrupoles Removal of the magnet covers Audio-visual inspection in pulsed mode Machine conditions Machine closed to non-MNC personnel during tests Power, cooling, interlocks, access operational Access system in «Magnet Patrol» mode Support from other groups BE/OP to power the magnets and lock the accesses All other teams ready to intervene in case of system/service failure (EPC, EL, MPE, ICS, CV, etc…) J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017

High voltage tests (PLAN 10987)
Magnet test campaign High voltage tests (PLAN 10987) To detect weaknesses in main magnet circuits insulation Main dipoles and quadrupoles (962 units) Busbars and water cooled cables are tested together with the magnets! Machine conditions Machine closed, in dedicated configuration (CIS system of EPC) Cooling circuits running Separation of power converters from load Test +/- 6kV on dipole and +/- 4 kV on quadrupole circuits, from BA3 In case of failure, localization in the machine, repair, and re-test Support from other groups TE/EPC for CIS configuration + HV test bench BE/OP for access control J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017
8
Magnet test campaign Thermal inspections (PLAN 10987)
To detect clogged cooling circuits or untightened electrical connections Removal of the magnet covers Powering of magnets after heat run period Inspection with thermal camera Machine conditions Machine closed to non-MNC personnel Power, cooling, interlocks, access operational Support from other groups BE/OP to power the magnets and for access control TE/EPC support for power converters operation Loose electrical connection Clogged cooling circuits J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017
9
Magnet test campaign Planning
Necessity to open all magnet covers to perform the tests and inspections (incl. thermal imaging) access restrictions Necessity have all technical services running as during operation done at the start of LS2 Preliminary planning proposed similar to LS1, with access reserved for MSC team: 4 weeks in SPS safety chain1 area 3 weeks in other SPS safety chains J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017
10
Preventive / corrective exchange of main magnets
Magnet system maintenance Preventive / corrective exchange of main magnets (PLAN 10989) Expected 10 to 15 main magnets to be replaced Based on inspection campaign results Aperture restrictions to be considered Machine conditions Free access to material lift and passage for transport equipment Support from other groups EN/HE, TE/VSC, EN/ACE/SU Inputs from BE/OP for aperture restrictions Planning to be discussed with coordination Main magnet replacement J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017
11
Magnet system maintenance
Magnet general maintenance (PLAN 10988) Corrective / preventive maintenance Repair of magnets non-conformities in-situ Cleaning of all magnet filters, gasket exchanges Busbar system inspection, cleaning of salpeter under covers Machine conditions Activities transparent for other teams Support from other groups None Activity distributed over the whole LS1 duration, ending with the most radioactive zones Clogged filter Broken pole shim J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017

Removal / reinstallation of magnets for aC coating
LIU activities Removal / reinstallation of magnets for aC coating (PLAN and 11003) Magnets removed from machine for aC coating and Impedance reduction program Details in TE-VSC presentation ( MBB (44 units in sextants 5 & 6) and QF (90 units in all sextants) will be aC treated in-situ QF SSS (90 units in 6 sextants) and QD SSS (11 units in sextants 5 & 6) will be dismantled and aC treated ex-situ QD (11 units in sextants 5 & 6) will be aC treated ex-situ Machine conditions Free access to material lift and passage for transport equipment Support from other groups EN/HE, TE/VSC, EN/ACE/SU Planning to be discussed with coordination J. Bauche, TE-MSC, 18/07/2017
