Targets for motor vehicle: Antitheft protection: immobilizer system Legal restriction, e.g. tachograph Confidentiality and reliability: safety from interception and reliable communication of the motor vehicle with the outside world Target for driver: Access control for external communication Anonymity: Cross linking of the motor vehicles versus invasion of privacy Legal restriction: e.g. electronic driving license This technical overview is focusing on application with Chip Card Cryptography

Deadline for Implementation: 1st May 2006 - for 27 EU-Member States - all new trucks from 3.5 t - all new buses with as least 9 seats Today 32 States use EU-Tachographs - 27 EU-Member States - 5 non-EU-Member States - round 11 Mio Tachograph-Cards are in use
