Study Guide Habitats of Georgia Piedmont Marsh Mountains Swamp
an area of gently rolling land between a coast and mountains Has many rivers and streams that are muddier and slower than rivers and streams in the mountains. Home to many different types of trees, birds, and animals. Marsh A marsh is a wetland in which mostly grasses and other soft-stem plants grow. Marshes provide shelter for many animals. Marshes filter harmful materials from water. Marshes can have fresh water and salt water. Mountains A mountain is an area of high land. Elevation tells how high something is above sea level. Mountains also have rivers and streams. Black bears are a type of animal that can survive in the mountains because of their thick fur. Swamp A swamp is another wetland in which mostly trees and other woody plants grow. Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp is the largest swamp in North America. Plants that eat animals are found in swamps because of poor soil.

Coastal Habitats Ocean Habitats Safety
Georgia’s coast is made up of barrier islands. A barrier island is a strip of land offshore that protects the mainland by blocking winds and waves. A dune is a mound of sand formed by moving wind or water. Plants that grown in dunes can grow in poor soil and stand strong winds. Roots of plants help make dunes because the roots trap sand and hold it in place. Ocean Habitats A reef is the ridge of rock at the bottom of the ocean. Sandy bottom and reef are two habitats that are found on the continental self. Safety NEVER TOUCH WILD PLANTS OR ANIMALS Wild plants could be poisonous. Ex) poison ivy
