Dinning for Dummies Etiquette Guidelines

Things to Know… Place the napkin on your lap before you start eating. Do not tuck it into a belt or under your chin. If there are six or fewer people at the table, wait until everyone is served before you begin to eat. If there is more, wait until tow or three have been served.

Things to Know… You may reach for serving dishes as long as you don’t have to lean across your neighbor. If you can’t reach the food easily, politely ask the person nearest the food to pass it to you. Don’t talk with your mouth full. Finish chewing, swallow the food, and then talk.

Things to Know… If you’re having problems getting food into your fork, push tem on with a piece of bread. If you have not bread, use the tip of your dinner knife to push the food onto the fork. Break one piece of bread off at a time before buttering it. Sit up straight when you eat, and don’t lean on your elbows.

Things to Know… If you’re dining at someone’s home and aren’t sure what to do, use your host’s actions as a guide. Cut food into small pieces for eating. If you must cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a napkin. If your coughing continues, excuse yourself and leave the table.

Things to Know… Never comb your hair or apply makeup while at the table. Don’t leave a spoon in your cup. You might knock the cup over if your hand accidentally hits the spoon. When you have finished eating, place your fork and knife on your plate, pointing toward the center.
