2 The Native Americans The First Native Americans to live in our area were the Atakapan Indians, they were hunting and gathering people.

3 Explorers The earliest European explorer of what became Montgomery County was the Frenchman Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who passed through the area in 1687.

4 Colonies In 1820, Forty-two families moved to our area and built a colony founded by Stephen F. Austin.

5 Our Community continues to Grow
The construction of the railroads and the lumber industry led our community to grow very quickly by

6 1886 In 1886 the Conroe Public School’s first classes were opened in a one- room school house.

7 1933 By 1933 more then 10,000 people lived in the area when the discovery of oil was made by George Strake.

8 1974 In 1974 The Woodlands was founded (created).

9 1990 By 1990 more then 30,000 people lived in The Woodlands.
Also in 1990 The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion was opened for concerts.

10 1994 Powell Elementary Opened!

11 2007 In 2007 The Woodlands Waterway opened.
