1 Brief to AMMO Working Group
America Makes & ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC) Brief to AMMO Working Group June 1, 2016 David Coyle, NAVSUP WSS

2 AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 2
AMSC Deliverable A standardization roadmap for additive manufacturing that identifies existing standards and specifications, as well as those in development, assesses gaps, and makes recommendations for priority areas where there is a perceived need for additional standardization, including in relation to needs already identified in the America Makes Additive Manufacturing Technology Roadmap AMSC will not develop standards or specifications; the hope is to help drive coordinated standards development activity Decisions will be based on consensus AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 2

3 AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 3
AMSC Timeline Target roadmap publication by end of 2016 Kickoff meeting (March 31) Determine Working Group structure and leaders Review landscape of existing standards / specs and those in development; assess what’s missing Discuss industry needs and coordination issues Cataloguing Phase (April) Complete standards landscape Gap Analysis Phase (April - June) Identify gaps and priorities for needed standards AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 3

4 AMSC Timeline (continued)
Draft Roadmap (July – Sept) Second face-to-face meeting (Sept 26?) Does the roadmap meet our expectations? What needs to be refined? Are gaps and recommendations clearly delineated? Will the document be used? Seek Public Comments on Roadmap (Oct) Refine Roadmap (Oct - Nov) Publish Roadmap (Dec) Promote Roadmap (2017) Assess Need for Roadmap Updates (2017) AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 4

5 AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 5
4 AMSC Working Groups Design Process and Materials Qualification & Certification Maintenance Preliminary list of issues to be addressed by each WG follow on subsequent slides Working groups will hold twice monthly web meetings of about 90 minutes duration. Meetings recorded to help capture actions items. Participants may sign up for one or more groups using the sign up sheet AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 5

8 AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 8
Qualification and Certification WG Co-Chairs: Armen Kurdian, U.S. Navy, and Shawn Moylan, NIST Ensure that all stages of a particular AM process have a set of commonly understood standards to enable Qualification Qualification is defined as ensuring suitability to meet functional requirements in a repeatable manner Ensure that each AMSC working group has adequate representation from industry & government Generate checklists to address all aspects of AM, to cover variability, repeatability, suitability, etc.  NDE/NDI (Non-Destructive Evaluation / Non-Destructive Inspection) AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 8

12 Definitions – ISO/IEC Guide 2:2004
Standard - document, established by consensus and approved by a recognized body, that provides, for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context NOTE Standards should be based on the consolidated results of science, technology and experience, and aimed at the promotion of optimum community benefits. Technical Specification - document that prescribes technical requirements to be fulfilled by a product, process or service NOTE 1 A technical specification should indicate, whenever appropriate, the procedure(s) by means of which it may be determined whether the requirements given are fulfilled. NOTE 2 A technical specification may be a standard, a part of a standard or independent of a standard. NOTE 3 Note 3 applies to the Russian version only. AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 12

13 Sample Gap Statement Template
Gap: Battery performance parameters and durability testing There is a need for further work on EV battery performance parameters and environmental durability test requirements Recommendation: Complete work on SAE J1798 and if possible consider harmonization with ISO Priority: Mid-term Potential Developer: SAE, ISO A “gap” means no published standard, specification, etc. exists that covers the particular issue in question AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 13

14 AMSC WG Architecture & Tasks - Slide 14
