1 The Enriched Model of Care Planning
Health and Neurological Impairment

2 Health (H) People with dementia are susceptible to acute confusional states and delirium What physical health problems might cause this and why?

3 Health A person with dementia may be unable to take precautions regarding their health. For example if they are diabetic they may not recognise hyper-glycaemia or if they suffer from angina what to do if experiencing pain.

4 Health It is important that people with dementia are assessed for sight and hearing problems as well as for pain. Pain is often not detected in people with dementia! Why?

5 Neurological Impairment (NI)
What may neurological impairment associated with dementia affect?

6 Neurological Impairment
These impairments will become more obvious as the dementia progresses overtime. Carers should aim to respond to any impairments in a way that supports the person living with dementia

7 Neurological Impairment
People living with dementia may have cognitive impairments such as poor learning of new information, dysphasia's, dyspraxia's and visuo-perceptual defects. This means that people with dementia may interpret their social and physical environments in a unique way. If compensations are not made for this then the person will experience excess disability.
