3 PARTS OF AN ESSAY
2
How to Generate a Thesis Statement
Almost all essays, no matter how complicated, can be reduced to a single question. Your first step, then, is to distill the assignment into a specific question. For example, if your assignment is, “Write a report on the causes of World War I,” turn the request into a question like, “What caused the out break of war in 1914?” After you’ve chosen the question your essay will answer that question. It is called a Thesis. The thesis states the view or argument of the author. That is what a thesis is! Topic Hockey Q: “Should fighting in hockey be allowed?” A: “Fighting in hockey should not be allowed because of the serious injuries it can cause, it takes away from game, and has a negative impact on young players. . .” OR A: “Fighting in hockey should be allowed because it is part of the game, adds to the excitement and the fans love it . . .” The answer to the question is the thesis statement for the essay.

This could be terms, some historical facts, general information : “World War I started in August 1914….” or “Capital punishment in Canada was repealed in the 1970’s” Once the background has been established you will need to establish the issue you will focus on for your essay: “So what caused the outbreak of war in 1914?” or “Should capital punishment be reinstated in Canada?” or “When should teenagers date?” Final sentence of your introductory paragraph will be the thesis statement.

The Body The body of the essay will have paragraphs which will have the following: (the number of paragraphs will depend on the size of essay) 1.Topic sentence 2. Evidence, examples, explanations and facts which support your thesis!!!! This is what your body should do! 3. The body paragraphs are where you argue and prove your essay. (This is why so many lawyers are history and political science majors - they learn how to argue in these subjects)
