4 Directions for Waves Stations
You will be spending a set amount of time at each station. Read the directions and begin the activity at the station. When you finish the activity, fill in the OBSERVATIONS column only. Remember: observations are FACTS. Facts are truths Facts can not be argued Can be proven true or false Examples: The container is filled to the 350 mL mark with water. The Sun rose at 6:54 this morning. Sound traveled faster through the desk than through the air. When the power is turned on, the game lights up and plays a song. Water can fall as precipitation, which may include rain, snow, or hail.

5 Station A: Marbles on a Ruler
Place five or six marbles in the groove of the ruler so that they touch each other. Roll another marble against the end of the line of marbles. Roll two, then three and so on. Observe what happens.

6 Station B: Stone in the Water
Hold the stone above the pan with water. Drop the stone into the water. Observe what happens. (Make sure you sketch the pattern of the waves.)

7 Station C: Water Drops Fill up the pipet with water from the beaker.
Allow one drop of water to fall into the center of the pan. Allow another drop to fall near the edge. Observe what happens. Sketch the pattern of waves that are seen.

8 Station D: Domino Fall Set up the dominoes in a straight line placing the dominoes close together, like the picture. Knock the dominoes over. Observe what happens. Set up the dominoes in a straight line placing the dominoes further apart, like the picture. Knock the dominoes over.

9 Station E: Slinky Pinch
Gently stretch the slinky between two people. One person will hold their end of the slinky in place. Send a pulse down the slinky by pinching together 3 coils of the slinky and then releasing them. Observe what happens. Send another pulse down the spring, this time pinching together 9 coils of the slinky and then releasing them.

10 Station F: Slinky Quick vs Slow
Sit on the floor with your slinky. Gently stretch the slinky between two people. One person will hold their end of the slinky in place. Keeping your slinky on the ground, quickly pull the free end of the slinky to one side and then return it to its original position. Observe what happens. Keeping your slinky on the ground, slowly pull the free end of the slinky to one side and then return it to its original position.

11 Station G: Slinky Stretch
Gently stretch the slinky between 2 people. One person will hold the end of their slinky in place. The other person will send a pulse down the slinky by pinching together 3 coils of the slinky and then releasing them. Observe what happens. Gently change the slinky to a different length that is shorter than the first time. Repeat sending a 3 coil pulse down the slinky and observe what happens. Gently change the slinky to a different length that is longer than the first time.

12 Station H: Jump Rope Shake
Stretch the jump rope between two people. One person will hold their end of the jump rope still. The other person will move the jump rope back and forth shoulder width. Observe what happens. Repeat moving the jump rope back and forth changing the distance you move the rope making the distance greater than shoulder width. (Maybe as far as you can reach.) Repeat moving the jump rope back and forth however changing the distance you move the rope making the distance less than shoulder width. (Maybe just move your wrist.)

13 Station I: Jump Rope on Door
Tie one end of the jump rope to a door. Move your end of the jump rope once up and down sending a pulse down the jump rope. Observe what happens. Repeat sending a pulse down the jump rope using more energy than the first trial. Repeat sending a pulse down the jump rope using less energy than the first trial.
