1 Aim: How do we translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions?
Do Now: List the words associated with each operation. Addition Multiplication Division Subtraction

2 Aim: How do we translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions?
Do Now: Write a verbal expression for each of the following: 3r + 4 D2 – 17 = 9 2(y + 8) < -5 Be creative! Use the words from your Math-English dictionary. For example, you could say “3 more than twice a number” instead of “2 times a number plus 3”

3 Translating Verbal Expressions into Algebraic Expressions
To translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions or equations, it’s important to remember these key words. Addition Keywords – -Sum, plus, added to, and (if no other operation indicated), more than*, total, increased by Subtraction Keywords – -Difference, minus, less than*, subtracted from*, decreased by Multiplication Keywords – -Product, multiplied by, times, of Division Keywords – -Quotient, divided by, divided into* *switching phrase

5 A few important notes… When using the words sum, difference, product, quotient, the two expressions are separated by the word AND Ex. The quotient of a number squared and twice the same number “less than” vs. “is less than” 5 less than a number means … 5 is less than a number means …

6 Six less than twice a number.
Let try some examples!! Six less than twice a number.

7 Five less than half of a number.

8 Four times the difference of a number squared and six.

9 Sixteen less than the quotient of twice a number and five.

10 Activity – Translating Expressions Dominoes
Cut out your tiles from the printout & take turns laying down tiles. Only verbal & algebraic expressions that are equivalent can touch. Then tape your dominoes together!

11 Homework Reminder! Worksheet on Translating Verbal Expressions!

12 Translate, then evaluate when x = -2
Exit Ticket: Translate, then evaluate when x = -2 The sum of twice a number and 7.
