Know your parts of speech! Describe the function of the following parts of speech: Noun Adjective Adverb

3 What is a phrase? Group of related words Used as single part of speech
Does not contain both verb and its subject EXAMPLES Walking quickly (no subject) With the girls (no subject or verb)

Preposition – shows relationship Preposition + object + modifiers Object = noun or pronoun in phrase Ex: The cat was stuck on the roof. Ex: You might find cobwebs above the rafters at our house.

8 Participial Phrases Participle + modifiers
Participle = verb ending in –ing or –d/ed, used as an adjective Ex: Seeing the cat, the dog barked loudly. Ex: She heard me sighing loudly. Ex: Grabbing my keys, I dashed out the front door.

10 Gerund Phrases Gerund + modifiers
Gerund = verb ending with –ing, used as a noun Ex: My favorite part of the show was his juggling. Ex: We worked better after resting.

Appositive = noun/pronoun placed next to another noun/pronoun to identify it Can come before or after word it modifies Not essential. Set off with commas!
