2. What is a Goal?
Goals give you a roadmap to your future. They provide something to strive for – some point in the future to reach. But, what exactly is a goal, and how do you know when you have achieved it?
Goals are specific. Setting goals is a way to focus your attention on what you want in the future. If you are not specific, you will never know where you are going. It would be like trying to follow a map that has no street names

3. Things to Remember
Goals must be realistic – you can’t lose 40 pounds in one month Must prioritize – rank in order of importance you, can’t accomplish it all at once. Do you have the resources you need to reach your goals? (money, information, health, energy, skill, etc.) have you thought about ALL of the possible resources? Thinking these through are the crux of being successful

4. SPECIFIC
What details do you want to accomplish? And you should only have one per Goal!
“I want to do better in history”
“I want to increase my history grade from an 85% to a 90%.

5. MEASURABLE
All goals should have a way to evaluate whether or not they were accomplished.
“I want to run the mile better.”
“I want to improve my mile time by 30 seconds.”

6. ATTAINABLE Goals must be something you are capable of reaching.
Which one would be a better goal for Tom Brady?
“I will help my team to win the 2017 Super Bowl”
“I will rehabilitate my knee so that I can play football again next season.”

7. Realistic
Make goals that are realistic to you and your skills/assets/talents
Which goal is better for an English teacher?
“My goal is to write an award winning novel”
“My goal is to inspire at least one student to become a writer.”

8. TIME - BOUND
Make sure that you have a time set as a “dead line” so your goal is not unending.
“My goal is to be able to run a half marathon.”
My goal is to run in a half marathon by May of 2009.

Short Term- 12 to 18 months out
Long Term- more than 18 months out

10. Final tips to Goal Setting:
Write down your goals and look at them often!
If you achieved your goals too easily, make your next goals harder.
Failure to meet goals only matters if you don’t learn something from your mistakes.
Goal setting is an important method of:
Deciding what’s important for you to achieve.
Motivating yourself.
Building self-confidence.

Think about all of the things you would need to accomplish the goal.
Goal: To achieve a 90 or better in English by May 2017.
Resources: Set aside TIME for studying/practicing; support from parents, teachers for additional tutoring, access to a computer with word/internet acccess.
