1 Foundation Apprenticeships have been developed by Skills Development Scotland with industry and are designed to ensure work readiness of young people, by introducing them to the world of work earlier. The mix of knowledge, skills and capability (assessed in the workplace) is delivered through structured, high quality industry engagements.

2 What you do: Spend time at college and work with a real employer whilst still at school What you get: A qualification at the same level of learning as a Higher (SCQF level 6). The time out of school will be spent at college and with a local employer, working towards an industry-recognised qualification. Many of Scotland best employers are coming on board with Foundation Apprenticeships. The level of this qualification is at SCQF Level 6 (the equivalent level of learning to a Higher) FA Frameworks cover range: 327 – 680 tariff points (equivalence range: 2 x C Highers - > 3x A Highers) SDS membership of Insight Board and contribution to Insight review in progress Current consultation will conclude in time for next Insights reporting round in September 2017

Offered in a wide range of careers from social services to software development Companies like Barclays, Amey and Tesco Bank are on board. Some of Scotland’s biggest and best employers are already involved in delivering the work based elements of Foundation Apprenticeships. Already pupils have been taken on (full or part-time job or Modern Apprenticeship) by the companies they did their Foundation Apprenticeship with, so they are an excellent way to get a foot in the door with a top employer.

6 develop real knowledge, skills and experience enhance your CV
make industry contacts get a qualification fast track onto a Modern Apprenticeship Articulate content on the slide. The Foundation Apprenticeship will equip young people with qualifications but crucially with experience of the workplace and skills that employers are looking for. And if you they want to go on to complete a Modern Apprenticeship it will reduce the amount of time it takes.

7 When you leave school you’ll be able to: get a job
progress on to a Modern or Graduate Level Apprenticeship study at college or uni With a Foundation Apprenticeship under their belt, young people have a range of options when they leave school. Upon completion a Foundation Apprenticeship could give you accelerated entry onto a Modern Apprenticeship, reducing the time it takes to complete this qualification. Discussions ongoing and agreements being formalised •Agreement from universities to accept FA for general and faculty admissions •Engagement events planned •Announcements in near future •Programme of activity to secure agreements by end of 2016 •Positive progress with UCAS to ensure FA awards are included within their processes for tariff rating for May 2017 The University of Glasgow has confirmed that FA’s will be incorporated into their Admissions Policy as an accepted qualification with immediate effect for entry to degree programmes in Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Engineering and Accountancy. They will not at this time be accepted for entry to Law, Medicine, Dentistry or Vet Medicine (this will be reviewed at a later date). Where specified subjects are required for entry to a degree programme (for example Maths and Physics for entry to Engineering), a Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering will not replace that requirement but will count as one of the additional subjects making up the total complement of qualifications (and in the case quoted for Engineering, an Engineering Foundation Apprenticeship would positively enhance that application). Over the next few weeks I hope we can  work together so that I can update our policy based on the release / availability of specific FA’s and will agree how we will phrase our entry criteria accordingly.
