4. Why Two LA Classes? 6th Grade 90 minutes of instruction!

Collaborative discussions: informal, Socratic seminars
Argumentative: debates, persuasive speeches
Diverse media presentations: power points, posters, character speeches (creative)
Difference between 6th and 7th is the acknowledging other points of view and possibly modifying own.

6. Curriculum- Writing Narratives/Poetry Research Writing
Answering short answer essay questions for other subjects
Executive/ Functional text: letters, s, agenda, directions, etc…

Avoiding plagiarism.
In-text citing: Paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting

Difference between 6th and 7th is students add an opposing point of view introduced in argumentative writing.

Be prepared: Grades may be lower for assignments written without guidance from me. Eventually these grades will increase throughout the year.

10. DUE DATES
Purpose: -to mimic real-world experiences -to practice time management techniques -experience positive/negative consequences for actions Due Date Ranges: -to create a healthy balance between school and home -to give students experience with time management -to give students adequate time to prepare for discussions

11. Due dates
Example: I help students plan and break preparations into mini-assignments. (In agendas)
Day 1- assignment finished- maybe not printed out yet- check printer and electronics so that they work
Day 2- double check assignment- print out- trouble shoot any problems- printer problems? Put on drive to print at library or if sending - do practice to self first to make sure it sends
Day 3- Print out assignment at home- finalize any research-finishing touches on notes- send

Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required materials; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence on the optic, text, or issue to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion.
Homework assignments are part of larger assignments which we do in class.
Students will lose points for not being prepared.

13. Due Dates
Work is due at the beginning of the class period, set time in Turnitin.com, or time- stamped for
Late work: 80% within 24 hours.
After the 24 hour grace period: 50%
If absent, the student will have time to make up the assignment based off of the amount of days missing. I will meet with the student, and then contact parents to make sure we have the new due date set.

14. Tutoring As needed: I will contact you and set up a time.

Everyone needs to go to school because if they don’t go they can get in trouble with the teacher and then that causes more trouble which is more trouble then its worth

15. “Mini-Class”
Who attends? Students who have a common need for help in a particular area.
How identified? Usually during the writing assignment I will notice that a student is struggling with a concept. Sometimes, I will select students after an assignment.
When? During conference period (Thursdays).
Communicated how? I will talk with your child and I will you. It will be expected that your child attends. It is his/her responsibility to be there on time and be prepared.
