2 Return on Investment What is ROI?
Definition: “A performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments” ( ROI = Gain from Investment – Cost of Investment Cost of Investment “The key to sustaining an apprenticeship program over time is to balance the interests of the employer, the apprentices, and the incumbent workforce. A successful program is one in which all three groups see benefits.” (Economics, Statistics and Administration, US Dept of Commerce)

3 Costs and Gains Costs: Financial: Levy
Resources: staff, mentorship and supervision, training materials, recruitment, procurement/contracting Management: organisational leadership, communications, engagement, policies/procedures/guidance, partnerships Human Resources: HR advice and support, contracts, probation periods, job descriptions and person specifications for apprentices, pastoral care, additional support for people with physical and/or learning disabilities/mental illness, supernumery time, 20% of the job training

4 Benefits Patient and Service Delivery:
Quality, time/cost efficiencies, increase staff to patient ratio, improved/increase/additional service delivery, filling skills gaps, contribution to reducing CPD costs, increase patient satisfaction, introduction of contemporaneous and contribution to research and innovation of treatment approaches, partnership approaches (integrated care) Workforce: Staff retention rates, reducing recruitment costs, gain a pipeline of skilled employees, and develop future managers, reducing CPD costs, filling skills gaps, access to a greater pool of workers and ability to target specific groups of job candidates, creation of new training and qualifications Soft skills: Apprenticeships lead to improved employee engagement, greater problem-solving ability, flexibility to perform a variety of tasks, and a reduced need for supervision.
