Our cornerstone is to act as an umbrella organisation which recognises and supports volunteer and community groups who look after the environment in Bolton. We will work with the Council, support each other, share good ideas. Our message: let’s restore pride in our town, and take responsibility for our own back yard. (We need a catchy name for this!) We want to project a POSITIVE approach at all times We are different because we will actively seek out like- minded people, not wait for them to come to us
4
Green Umbrella How to spread our Umbrella? We want as many groups as possible to form our network The timing seems right – people are joining in It’s NOT just about litter! It’s about green spaces, community gardens, “in bloom” projects, recycling Imagine what a strong network of several hundred committed people can achieve Imagine how much expertise and experience there would be – teachers, IT, legal, forestry, horticulture

Green Umbrella Changing Behaviour
WHAT IT WILL TAKE: Getting the message out there Asking people and organisations to take the pledge Monitoring and reporting back Reinforcement, reinforcement, reinforcement
6
Business initiative Green Umbrella
contact businesses to ask them to take a pledge to keep their business area litter-free and well- maintained Businesses could range from large (supermarkets, Warburtons, D.S. Smith) to small (parades of shops) Then the umbrella (this means YOU) can reinforce the pledge, ensure that pledges are kept and report back any failures. This empowers communities

Green Umbrella Schools initiative
We need continuity and reinforcement to change behaviour; objective: to deliver a workshop to EVERY schoolchild in Bolton at least once per year Are you a former or practicising teacher? Or a youth worker? Or just someone with an interest in this idea? Would you like to take part in designing and/or delivering workshops and programmes for children? E.g. 1. Why is dropping litter wrong? 2. What is Recycling and why is it important? If so PLEASE GET IN TOUCH!

Green Umbrella Other ideas: Social events Workshops:
Talks by council staff to provide information; e.g. did you know that it costs Bolton MBC £68,000 per day to dispose of “grey bin” waste? Brainstorming, to discuss problem areas with council, how GU may be able to help, e.g. fly-tipping
