Most issues young people face relate to the following;
• Social and cultural barriers: English as an additional language, peer pressure and family background, effects of cultural parenting styles. • Practical and personal barriers: transport; time; learning difficulty; disability; caring responsibilities; childcare; finance; cost; language; and lack of access to information, lack of motivation, lack of availability to learn. • Emotional barriers: low resilience, lack of self-esteem or confidence due to low skills levels; negative personal experience of learning; previously undetected or unaddressed learning disabilities; social problems such as unemployment, abuse or bullying. • Workplace: time off; access; discrimination; unsupportive managers; shift work; isolation. Any or more of the above issues can result in one or more of the following below; - Poor attitude towards learning - Disengaging and / or disruptive behaviour - Poor attendance and punctuality - Low confidence including poor hygiene - Low attainment - Low aspirations
