Kingdom: Fungi Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia For many years scientist classified fungi as plants but a few traits separate them: 1.) plants have chlorophyll and photosynthesize. Fungi do not 2.) plants have true roots, leaves, & stems. Fungi do not. 3.) plant cell walls are composed of cellulose. Fungi’s are chitin

Hyphae: long multicellular strands making up the body of fungi Mycelium: long strands of underground hyphae that form tangled masses Fruiting body: reproductive structure of fungi that grows above ground

11 Lichen Lichen: is a mutualistic relationship between a fungus and algae or photosynthetic bacteria Only certain fungi, algae, or cyanobacteria can combine to form a lichen Body consists of hyphae with algal cells which can carry out photosynthesis: produces sugar which feeds both the organisms Lichen important in primary succession: can live on bare rock Live in any environment but common in cool/dry environments
